What skills and experience we're looking for

i. We invite applications for a permanent, full-time Head of Mathematics to work at our selective boys’ grammar school. This post offers the chance to lead an enthusiastic, supportive, and welcoming department in an outstanding school, with a clear focus on driving excellent progress and attainment in Mathematics.

ii. Our Mathematics department fosters a shared passion between teachers and pupils, creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment. All pupils study Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics, with an additional Level 3 qualification in Algebra available for some. Mathematics is especially popular at A Level, underlining the high regard in which the subject is held across the school community. We value innovation, collaboration, and a willingness to embrace technology to enhance learning.

iii. Colleagues in the department teach across Key Stages, with a significant amount of Advanced Level teaching, including Further Mathematics. Ideally, the successful candidate will bring experience of teaching A Level Mathematics and will be able to lead the department in this area. We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic practitioner and leader, passionate about Mathematics, dedicated to teamwork, and keen to explore continuous improvement in their practice.

iv. The department benefits from six dedicated teaching rooms and leads the school in the effective use of OneNote to support teaching and learning. Pupils are taught in their form groups from Years 7 to 9, while setting is introduced for Years 10 and above. At Key Stage 5, there are five teaching groups in both Years 12 and 13.

v. Years 7-9 are taught in their form groups with setting in Years 10 & 11. There are five teaching groups in each of Years 12 & 13.

vi. The department is the only team in the school with a colleague holding a second in department position in order to manage the workload of a sizeable team.

vii. Extra-curricular opportunities form a core part of the department’s ethos. We organise Mathematics activity days, host visiting lecturers from local universities, and take pupils to university-based enrichment events. All pupils can participate in Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Mathematics Challenges, where results are consistently strong. We also enter the UK Maths Team Challenges and other national competitions, supported by lunchtime booster sessions. The school library and our online learning platform provide a wealth of mathematical resources to further inspire and challenge our pupils.

The school takes its responsibility for the safety of the students extremely seriously and applicants will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of their responsibilities in this area at all stages of the application process.

If you wish to apply for the position, please complete an application form (available from the website) as well as a covering letter (word processed, no more than two sides of A4, font size eleven) explaining why your experience to date makes you suitable for the position. Both should be e-mailed to vacancies@ast.kevibham.org

Please note that references will be obtained prior to the interview. Referees must be able to comment on your ability as a teacher and must include the Head Teacher of the last school or institution in which you were employed except in the case of applicants still in training when one of the two references must be from the course tutor.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school on 0121 327 1130 if you have any questions that you would like ask about the position or would like to arrange a visit to the school before submitting an application.
