What skills and experience we're looking for

As Head of Maths you will lead the development of all aspects of the Mathematics Department, primarily the quality of curriculum, teaching and learning and assessment. You will line manage members of the Mathematics Department and build a real team identity, ensuring that the whole team is empowered to improve and develop their classroom practice. You will have an up-to-date knowledge of the best pedagogical practice in Mathematics and share this with others in an effort to achieve consistency of approach and equity of opportunity for all learners. You will be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of student progress and raising attainment in this subject.

As a key middle leader you will contribute to the embedding of our wider school values and school improvement priorities, implementing devolved management responsibilities as required.

What the school offers its staff

This is a really exciting time to join our Maths department and become a formative member of the team. Having just received a rating of Good from Ofsted in November 2023, you will be joining us on our journey to ensuring that Marlwood is an exceptional school that lies at the heart of a close knit community. With around 550 students, we are a smaller than average secondary school and this brings with it many benefits, not least our ability to get to know our children quickly, understand their individual needs and place high quality education at the heart of everything we do. Our values of Resilience, Respect and Responsibility are lived throughout our school community.

The Maths department has an ambitious, well sequenced and knowledge-led curriculum which both supports and challenges students throughout. We have based this largely on the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, adapting and developing these resources to ensure they fit the needs of our students. Diagnostic questions, deliberate practice and worked examples are embedded throughout our schemes of work. We have a bank of central lesson resources which support our staff with planning, foster collaboration and help embed consistency through the department.

We pride ourselves on our CPD support, both at school and Trust level. As a school, we invest in personalised coaching for all staff, with a focus on subject-specific pedagogy and teaching and learning. We also have a central Trust education team who support and deliver high quality training.

We can offer you:

  • School commitment to CPD and development of all staff including collaborative support and instructional coaching to allow teachers to thrive.
  • Trust support, development and a facilitated collegiate approach to curriculum implementation, best practice and assessment.
  • Commitment to inclusivity and fostering of diversity
  • Values and vision that are lived not laminated
  • Warm, open and honest culture and learning community

Commitment to safeguarding

CSET is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful candidates are subject to child protection screening appropriate to the post, which will include an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the children’s workforce and a Children’s Barred List check.

This is a warm and friendly school with a family feel where
each child is appreciated and cared for who they are, as well
as what they achieve and go on to become.

Being a smaller than average secondary school, our size is
definitely our strength. We pride ourselves on being a kind
and caring student focussed school, where every member of
staff makes it their business to get to know each child as
soon as they enter the Marlwood family.

Our pastoral care is second to none. Our dedicated pastoral
staff work very closely with students to understand their
needs and provide the very best support and care. After all,
happy children are more likely to be successful children!
Marlwood has recently received investment that is funding a
facelift of the school to include new classrooms for art,
design technology and science. The school also benefits
from expansive grounds including tennis courts, astro pitch
and a multi-purpose playing field. There is a real sense of
fresh air at the school!
