Head of MFL
MPS - UPS & TLR2b
To start September 2026

Consett Academy is seeking to appoint an outstanding Head of Modern Foreign Languages to lead and develop our dedicated Modern Languages department from September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and talented practitioner to shape the strategic direction of MFL and drive excellence in teaching and learning.

Consett Academy currently offers French and German at GCSE level, and we are pleased with the department’s recent achievements. Consequently, we intend to expand our curriculum by offering A Level French and introducing GCSE Spanish, subject to the appointment of a suitable candidate. You will have the aptitude to be a resilient, organised, and inspiring leader, with the presence and communication skills to engage students and empower your colleagues.

As Head of Department, we require a gifted, enthusiastic linguist and an excellent classroom practitioner, who can provide strong professional leadership, continue to develop and improve our high-quality, ambitious curriculum and consistently strong GCSE outcomes. You will be accountable for driving standards in teaching and learning, using data, assessment and interventions effectively, to raise attainment and secure sustained progress, whilst fostering a culture of high expectations, collaboration, and continued improvement.

You will also line manage and develop colleagues, via performance management, and contribute to whole-school improvement, working closely with senior leaders, pastoral teams and the SENCO, to ensure that provision meets the needs of all learners and that safeguarding remains paramount. The MFL department at Consett Academy works closely with the Director of Specialism and the other secondary schools in the trust, collaborating to share best practice and support one another.

The role also includes responsibility for departmental resources, curriculum links with partner primary schools, and promoting languages as a vital part of students’ future success. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of GCSE outcomes, extensive secondary teaching experience and, ideally, proven middle leadership experience.

At Consett Academy, we offer a supportive and forward-thinking environment, high-quality professional development, opportunities for career progression across our partner schools, and a leadership team committed to staff wellbeing. Prospective candidates are warmly welcomed to visit Consett Academy prior to application to experience our school community and discuss the role in more detail. We look forward to receiving your application.
