Head of MFL Faculty job summary

JCoSS is a voluntary-aided school of 1,400 students, including a thriving Sixth Form of around 400 students. We are a highly regarded, oversubscribed faith school at the heart of the London community. Our students achieve excellent academic outcomes, with almost 50% of all GCSE grades at 7+ and nearly 50% of all A Level grades at A or A*. Alongside a broad and ambitious A Level offer, we are proud to provide a wide range of vocational pathways, ensuring that every student can pursue excellence in a way that reflects their talents and aspirations. While we celebrate our academic success, we are clear that grades alone do not define an outstanding education. At JCoSS, we are committed to developing open-minded, thoughtful young people - mensches - who do the right thing even when nobody is watching. We want our graduates to navigate a changing world with integrity and compassion, able to contribute positively and meaningfully to their and the wider community.

We are currently seeking a Head of Faculty with the ability to teach French to join our school. We seek an exceptional classroom practitioner and passionate advocate for the subject, with the drive and expertise to develop our students’ creative and technical capabilities.

We are looking for a teacher with extensive French-teaching experience from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 who is keen to shape and strengthen our curriculum. The ability to teach Spanish is helpful but not mandatory. What matters most is leadership, a clear vision of what superb teaching looks like, intellectual curiosity, and the ambition to make a significant impact with strong ambition.

The Languages Faculty includes French, Spanish and Ivrit (Modern Hebrew) - all of which are taught as spoken and written languages arising from vibrant living cultures. From September 2026 students will study French or Spanish, along with Ivrit in Year 7. In year 8 they can swap Ivrit for French or Spanish should they wish, and they can reduce their language option by 1 in Year 9. All three languages are offered to GCSE and at A Level.

Students also regularly continue their study at university. The Faculty consists of 10 teachers, plus Foreign Language Assistants, and the current model includes Heads of Department for each language. We are keen to hear from experienced teachers of Languages, with leadership experience or aspiration, and of any faith or none. No knowledge of Ivrit (Hebrew) is required.

At JCoSS, teaching is both purposeful and demanding. Our staff are deeply committed to our students and to one another, contributing fully to the academic, pastoral and co-curricular life of the school. In return, you will join a collaborative, forward-thinking department, with excellent facilities and colleagues who are generous with their expertise.

Pastoral care at JCoSS is exceptional central to who we are. Our dedicated team of over 15 pastoral professionals work tirelessly to ensure that every student is known, supported and challenged to flourish. Relationships matter here: warmth and humour sit comfortably alongside high expectations and mutual respect. We also believe that great schools are built by great professionals who are themselves lifelong learners. Continuous improvement is at the heart of our culture; sitting still is never an option at JCoSS. We are committed to developing our staff through high-quality professional learning, thoughtful coaching and a shared commitment to reflection and growth.

JCoSS is a place where ambition and kindness go hand in hand, where young people are encouraged to strive, to think deeply and to act with integrity. If you share our belief in the transformative power of education and want to play a meaningful role in shaping the next generation, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Our Vision: JCoSS is an academic, aspirational learning community, known and respected for our pioneering spirit, our humanity and our excellent outcomes.

Our Ethos: If you think you know what working in a Jewish school might be like, be ready to think again. Our outward-looking and pluralist Jewish ethos combines an embrace of open-minded values with a deep love of the varied riches of Jewish tradition. The staff and leadership team includes different faiths and none at all levels, and the school has a culture of purposeful good humour and humanity. We are a school like no other.

Our Results: We have a track record of outstanding results. Students achieve excellent outcomes and make great progress. In 2023 46% of A level grades were at A*or A and more than 79% of Cambridge Technical grades were Distinction* or Distinction. 45% of GCSE grades were grade 7 or higher, with more than a quarter of the cohort achieving at least 7 GCSEs at grade 7 or better. Our ALPS grade has been consistently 2 at both A level and GCSE, and our ‘Progress 8’ score is consistently significantly above national average. Supported by a strong programme, students every year gain places at Oxbridge and for Medical and Veterinary Study, as well as for a wide range of specialisms and competitive courses at prestigious institutions.

Staff Benefits: We appoint on potential as well as experience, and we are committed to supporting staff development. Several non-teaching colleagues have trained with us as teachers; our rich CPL programme includes full induction for new teaching staff including ECTs, NPQ programmes, and financial support for MA courses, Action Research projects and many other opportunities. Additional responsibilities are always considered for suitable candidates and we offer ECTs employment for the last few weeks of the summer term. Our admissions policy includes priority places for the children of all staff*. Our website details a huge number and variety of staff wellbeing initiatives.
* (Children, Jewish and non-Jewish, of JCoSS staff who have a permanent contract of employment and have completed two years of service on the last day of the summer term of the academic year prior to application)

Our Location & Community: The school is in beautiful £50m buildings overlooking the Green Belt. It is easily accessible from Northern, Piccadilly and Overground rail links, public buses run past the entrance and a school coach service (available to staff) serves our whole catchment area. We attract students from eloquent and supportive communities across North London and Hertfordshire.
