Head of Music job summary

Head of Music

Location: Barnet, London — a five minute walk from
High Barnet tube station

Start: Jan or April 2023

Opportunity for an exceptional teacher to head up our Music Department,
shaping a new Ark secondary school as we embark on Key Stage 4

In September 2019, Ark Pioneer, a non-selective secondary
school, opened its doors to our brand new building in Barnet and welcomed in
our first year 7. By the time these pupils reach year 13, we’ll have over a
thousand pupils. Our school is focused on delivering a standard of education
matching the very best schools in the country. Our vision is that every pupil
leaves Ark Pioneer with real options, be it embarking on the university course
of their choice or starting out in their chosen career.

We are recruiting a team of exceptional staff to achieve
our vision and work together to create a genuinely outstanding school. Music is
incredibly important to our school life; almost a quarter of pupils learn an
instrument in school during the day, we have ensembles and young artists
participating and performing at network events and we were very proud to be
awarded a Music Mark last year for our team’s work to shape music provision at
Pioneer. This is also an exciting time to join the team as we launch our Key
Stage 4 provision this year. The new Music Lead will plan our offer to ensure
we promote inclusion and joy in the learning of music as well as supporting our
elite musicians and singers. We will develop every teacher that joins our team,
providing one-to-one support, coaching and mentoring and access to extensive
network training.

The
ideal candidate will

  • Have a strong academic background, with good A Levels or equivalent, and a good degree
  • Combine subject matter expertise with a passion for
    teaching music
  • Share the Ark Pioneer vision and be aligned with the six pillars underpinning it
  • Value and support practices driving
    continued
    progress across
    the network of Ark schools.

Please submit your application by 9am on Friday 14th
October. For further information, a confidential discussion or any technical
queries please contact c.conces@arkpioneer.org and our Principal will be in touch with you.

Closing Date: 9am on Friday 14th

We’re lucky to be based in a brand-new building with top class facilities. We serve a wonderfully diverse community - we are non-denominational, mixed gender and two-fifths of our pupils receive pupil premium funding. We’re led by our values - Aim High, Have Integrity, Be Kind and Model Determination and our team truly unite behind our vision. Curriculum is incredibly important to us and we’ve planned backwards from university readiness to give our pupils the very best in every subject discipline. We timetable collaborative planning and love to engage in ‘productive struggle’. Every team member is supported with coaching and tailored professional development, whatever stage they are at in their career. Our extended school day (we finish at 4 four days a week and earlier on Wednesday) allows us to offer a broad, rich curriculum and timetabled enrichment for every child - but we never have meetings after school. Our team say: ‘All staff are incredibly supportive and positive, and it is a great environment to work in’.
