Job Title: Head of Physical Education

Location: Esteem North Academy - Chesterfield

Grade/Scale: MPS / UPS Plus SEN 1 plus TLR2a

Contract: 32.5 hours per week

Are you flexible, driven and ready for a new challenge?

We are looking to offer a full -time permanent contract for an inspiring teacher and leader to join our academy as Head of Physical Education. This is a new role and will include a teaching timetable of physical activity for KS3 and KS4 at our secondary Chesterfield sites. You will take responsibility for producing a new curriculum for PE with the purpose of engaging our pupils in an innovative and relevant offer of physical activity whilst promoting healthy living and positive wellbeing. Consideration must be made for our lack of facilities and space at each site. We must have an equal offer and the same curriculum at each of the 3 secondary sites. You will have overall responsibility for the quality of delivery of PE across the 3 secondary sites. There is currently no physical education curriculum in place and therefore you will have scope to produce this using your own creativity to meet our pupils needs. You will be able to explore possible qualifications for our pupils considering when they come to roll at the point of permanent exclusion.

The focus of PE is to promote the benefits of physical activity in relation to fitness, wellbeing, resilience, skill and social development. There will be scope to expand the qualifications available over time as additional options for KS4. We do offer KS3 Duke of Edinburgh and there will need to be collaboration with the Head of DofE to link skill development and assessment procedures across these subjects. We may also like over time to be able to offer DofE as an option for KS4 pupils and you may also contribute to the teaching delivery of this subject. You will have a timetabled teaching role but will be expected to visit all 3 secondary sites in order to model and quality assure the teaching and learning of your subjects. Some of your team will consist of teaching assistants who will also contribute to the delivery of sessions. You will therefore need to be an excellent teacher to colleagues and plan for their CPD. You will plan to assess the quality of the PE lessons and monitor engagement, skill and knowledge development. You will ensure that the curriculum is sequenced, fully resourced, within budget and allows pupils to make progress. Our sites are small compared to mainstream and house around 100 pupils. Classes may have up to around 10 pupils and you may be an allocated form tutor.

We welcome applications from candidates who are able to plan and teach engaging and inspiring physical education lessons to challenging and disengaged KS3 and 4 pupils. You will need to think outside of the box. We do not have the facilities of large mainstream schools.

Applicants should have good knowledge and experience of working with disaffected pupils in a school or other alternative setting. An affinity for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties is an essential quality for this challenging but rewarding opportunity. Applicants should be resilient, have high expectations, and a sense of humour. You must be able to build positive relationships with our pupils and have innovative ideas for engagement in physical activity. A growth mindset and positive ethos are essential characteristics that we are looking for.

An allocated base will be named for payment of mileage and any travel calculation between sites for CPD or for engaging in off -site rewards trips etc. Candidates must have access to a car with business insurance included. All staff may be expected at times to transport pupils in their own cars.

Please see the attached Application pack including a welcome from the Head Teacher and more information about Esteem North Academy and Esteem MAT. We recommend that all potential candidates contact the Headteacher directly prior to application and, if appropriate, then have an informal visit to the site.

The North East Derbyshire Support Centre provides programmes of education to pupils identified as being at risk of exclusion, or who have already been permanently excluded from mainstream education. We meet the varied and complex needs of children in Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, at three sites located in Chesterfield and in the High Peak.

We are looking to recruit an experienced professional to join our academy to support our vulnerable pupils who are on roll at the High Peak site to engage in bespoke education programmes at off -site locations. These pupils may require bespoke packages as they are not yet group or school site ready. You may also be required to take pupils to visit other off site alternative provisions and transport pupils to site if they make progress to be able to engage in on site learning. This new role is available due to an increase in pupil numbers across the academy. This role will involve lone working.

Pupils may be permanently excluded or at risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream and therefore often require additional support to keep them as safe as possible and to help them re-engage in education. Pupils at our Hasland and High Peak sites are in KS3 and KS4 and may be with us for limited time before they re-integrate back into a mainstream school. Others may require more substantial support to help them progress socially and emotionally sufficiently enough to engage in learning. The successful candidate will be required to offer support by delivering off -site peripatetic education to pupils in their homes or other suitable public venues. The core skills of english and maths along with PSHRE will be the focus.

Mileage is paid for, and applicants are therefore required to have access to transport and business use included on their car insurance.

Every child deserves an education. Our primary aim is to support and re-engage young people, enabling them to think positively about their future pathway, and life after the Support Centre, whether that be re-integration into mainstream, further education or employment. Our Vision: "Inspire, Achieve, Exceed"

Our Pupils will:

• Feel safe, valued and trusted

• Recognise and achieve their full potential

• Take responsibility for their behaviour, and make healthy lifestyle choices

• Be positive about themselves and their future

• Be tolerant of others, and of the beliefs and views of others

• Be successful learners, both independently and when working with others

• Be self-motivated and have high expectations

We will achieve this by:

• Creating a safe learning environment, free of stigma and negativity

• Celebrating the success and achievements of every member of the learning community

• Establishing nurturing and supportive relationships between staff and pupils

• Setting high expectations for behaviour and academic success

• Providing a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that provides the skills, confidence and qualifications to access opportunities in life

• Innovating learning, to engage and inspire

• Promoting tolerance and mutual respect

• Providing opportunities for students, parents and carers to voice opinions which form part of the decision-making process

• Providing an inclusive programme of learning opportunities and experiences that promote engagement
