Head of PSHCE and Careers job summary

Shape a seven-year journey that helps every young person thrive beyond our school gates

At The Bishop Wand Church of England School, we are seeking an outstanding Head of Faculty for PSHCE & Careers to lead, design and deliver a coherent and ambitious programme from Year 7 to Year 13. This role is central to how we nurture knowledge, skills, character and aspiration, enabling our students to grow year-on-year into confident, compassionate and well-prepared young adults.

Rooted in our Christian ethos of realising God-given potential, our community is ambitious, inclusive and deeply values driven. We are proud of our strong pastoral culture and our commitment to personal development, wellbeing and future readiness for every student.

This is not an SLT role. As a middle leader, you will work collaboratively across faculties and alongside curriculum leaders to map and audit PSHCE provision across our whole school. You will partner closely with our Pastoral team to strengthen pastoral care and personal development through the curriculum, ensuring a joined-up and meaningful experience for all students.

What you will lead

  • A seven-year PSHCE & Careers journey (Years 7-13) that is preventive, age-appropriate and responsive to local and national priorities.

  • Designated PSHCE curriculum time at KS3, a high-quality tutor-time programme across all key stages, and three impactful off-timetable days each year.

  • A high-impact enrichment and careers offer, working with excellent external partners and speakers, developing meaningful employer encounters, FE/HE links and workplace learning aligned to the updated Gatsby Benchmarks.

  • A whole-school RSHE/PSHCE curriculum map and audit, developed collaboratively with Heads of Department and Faculty, ensuring consistency, progression and compliance.

  • Strategic oversight of our Brighter Futures programme, enabling students to collect and showcase developing skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, creativity, independence, problem-solving and personal development, clearly mapped to the Gatsby Benchmarks.

What you will bring

  • Vision, credibility and curriculum expertise to inspire both staff and students.

  • A strong and current understanding of RSHE, PSHCE, citizenship and careers guidance.

  • Experience of working across curriculum teams to map and audit provision, and of partnering effectively with Pastoral leaders and Heads of Year to enhance wellbeing and pastoral care.

  • Confidence in commissioning, managing and quality-assuring external providers, including ensuring impartial access to technical and apprenticeship pathways.

  • A clear track record of raising standards and creating inclusive, safe learning environments for sensitive topics, with safeguarding always at the forefront.

  • Desirable: Experience of leading enrichment or skills-based programmes.

Why Bishop Wand?

  • We are a warm, purposeful Church of England school community, with a clear Christian ethos and a thriving Sixth Form.

  • We are in our second full year as a Multi Academy Trust which offers us the opportunity to deepen our shared culture, sharpen our collective ambition and strengthen our impact - on every child, in every classroom.

  • We are proud to be rated Good by Ofsted (March 2022) and Excellent by SIAMS (February 2023).

  • We offer a rich co-curricular life and an ambitious leadership and professional development culture where staff are supported to grow and flourish.

As a Church of England school, we welcome applications from people of all faiths and of no faith.
