What skills and experience we're looking for
Shevington High School is a successful and popular 11-16 community school, built upon our core values of respect, inclusion, aspiration, and kindness. We are seeking to appoint a Head of PSHE and Careers. This post represents an expansion to our team and offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious teacher moving into leadership or an experienced leader. (If you are interested in a part‑time role, please indicate this on your application.)
The successful candidate will work within our unique SAIL team. At Shevington High School our SAIL curriculum is a dedicated programme focused on personal development beyond the classroom and is an integral part of our mission to ensure that all students develop strong character and learn to embrace our belief that ‘Life is what you make it!.’ Our SAIL curriculum, developed from our work with the KED schools (our international partners) is designed to foster student agency and support students to be outward looking individuals ready to take on the challenges of life once they leave our school. PSHE forms a central part of this mission.
The successful candidate will lead the design and delivery of PSHE and Careers Curriculum. PSHE is delivered to all pupils by their form tutor in a dedicated teaching slot. The successful candidate will not be required to teach a timetable of PSHE, but they will be the driving force of the curriculum design and pedagogy employed to make this critical subject come to life. They will work alongside the Assistant Headteacher who leads Personal Development.
The successful candidate will teach in their own specialist subject – please state in your application which subject(s) this is. We are open to applications from candidates from any specialism, with our focus being on finding the right leader who has the passion and drive to further develop the work that has already been done in the school on this area.
At Shevington High School, PSHE is studied through three main strands - ‘Health and Wellbeing’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Living in the Wider World.’ The PSHE and Careers curriculum at Shevington High School is designed to empower students to take ownership of their personal and professional futures. Rooted in our core values, it inspires students to achieve excellence, embrace challenges with positivity, and think innovatively.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for PSHE and Careers Education, ensuring a high-quality, inclusive and statutory-compliant curriculum across all year groups.
- Develop and evaluate an engaging PSHE curriculum that supports students’ health, relationships, character and preparation for life in modern Britain.
- Lead and support staff delivering PSHE, providing guidance, resources and training to ensure consistency and high standards of teaching.
- Monitor impact through student voice, quality assurance and evaluation, using evidence to drive continual improvement.
- Work collaboratively with senior leaders and wider teams to ensure PSHE and Careers is central to the school’s personal development and wellbeing provision.
- Uphold our school values of respect, inclusion, aspiration and kindness.
This is an exciting development for our team, and we look forward to hearing from applicants who feel they can complement and enhance the learning experiences we currently offer, while embodying our school values in their approach to teaching and supporting students. The successful candidate will provide clear vision and leadership to ensure PSHE and Careers Education has a meaningful and lasting impact on every student’s personal development.

About the School
Shevington High School is a popular 11-16 community school located in the village of Shevington. We are 3 miles from Wigan town centre and mere minutes from the M6 motorway. The school is smaller than the average size secondary school. We have 178 students in all years and are currently oversubscribed with a waiting list in Year 7.
Shevington is a thriving and vibrant school. We work incredibly hard as a team to support pupils to make excellent progress in their learning from their varied starting points on entry. The school has celebrated very good examination results over recent years and we pride ourselves on our constant drive for improvement.
We pride ourselves at Shevington in that we put the student at the centre of learning through the delivery of high quality teaching which enables all of our pupils to learn effectively. The school has a clear and well-articulated vision and intent for the curriculum and pedagogical approach in school, grounded on current research and methodologies nationally and internationally. This is drawn from the work we have been doing over the last 9 years on Student Agency in Learning in conjunction with Kunskapsskolan Schools (Sweden) for which we have been recognised as a KED inspired school.
The school has a robust teaching and learning strategy incorporating digital devices and using Google Classroom to enhance student learning. A distinct part of student life at Shevington High School is coaching. We see coaching as the key to personalised learning and putting students at the centre of their learning. Students attend coaching in groups of 4-5 students once a week. In the coaching session the students are encouraged to set weekly learning goals and reflect on progress made.
