Head of RE job summary

Head of Religious Education – King’s Leadership Academy Bolton

Inspire. Challenge. Excel.

King’s Leadership Academy Bolton is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an outstanding and driven Head of Religious Education to lead our thriving RE department. We are seeking a dedicated professional who shares our belief in the power of knowledge and character education to transform lives and who is committed to delivering an ambitious and meaningful RE curriculum.

King’s Bolton is a non-selective free school grounded in traditional values and informed by the most effective international educational research. As part of the Great Schools Trust, we are proud of our growing reputation for excellence, with the academy being significantly oversubscribed, reflecting the strong demand for our distinctive approach to education.

Our Religious Education department is central to the academy’s mission of developing thoughtful, reflective, and morally grounded young people. We deliver an intellectually rich and values-driven curriculum that promotes critical thinking, religious literacy, and a deep understanding of philosophical and ethical perspectives. This is a rare opportunity to lead a dedicated team and shape the academic and cultural life of the school through high-quality RE provision.

We offer a knowledge-rich, well-sequenced curriculum that places conceptual understanding, cultural awareness, and ethical reasoning at its core. Schemes of work are thoughtfully planned and resourced to a high standard, with a strong emphasis on teacher wellbeing through minimal marking policies and research-led teaching strategies.

At King’s Bolton, our unique mission is to foster academic excellence alongside the character and leadership development of every child. Our students are hardworking, respectful, and aspirational, creating a rewarding and fulfilling environment for teaching and learning. Staff often comment on the supportive and positive atmosphere where colleagues genuinely look forward to Monday mornings.

As a valued member of the Great Schools Trust, you will benefit from:

  • Weekly dedicated CPD time to support your ongoing professional development

  • Access to exceptional leadership training and clear career progression pathways

  • A collaborative, caring culture that prioritises staff wellbeing

  • A strong focus on academic rigour, character education, and high expectations

This role is more than a middle leadership post; it is a chance to shape the moral and intellectual character of future leaders, contribute to a values-driven community, and grow as a professional in an environment where both staff and students flourish.

We’re looking for an inspirational Head of Religious Education with:

  • A recognised teaching qualification with QTS and a specialism in Religious Education or a related humanities subject

  • Strong subject knowledge and a passion for exploring religious, ethical, and philosophical questions

  • Ability to lead, inspire, and develop a team of teachers

  • High expectations for both academic outcomes and character development

  • A vision for how RE can contribute meaningfully to whole-school culture and values
