About Us: Barnhill is a heavily oversubscribed, high performing school that places wellbeing and quality of life at the heart of its ethos. Barnhill performs in and around the top 5% of schools in the country and was judged to be outstanding by Ofsted in February 2024. The sixth form was judged to be a very strong aspect of the school in the inspection.

Barnhill is part of Middlesex Learning Partnership, a multi-academy trust which is dedicated to providing exceptional educational opportunities for young people, fostering inclusive learning environments, and nurturing a strong sense of community. With three schools under our care—Barnhill High School, Belmore Primary, and William Byrd Primary—our mission is to ensure every child has access to outstanding facilities that inspire success.

Staff Wellbeing: We have a very well thought of staff wellbeing that focusses on allowing staff to concentrate on their work without unnecessary impediment. In addition to this there is a range of supportive measures such as marking from home, wellbeing events and staff celebrations.

The Role: Barnhill Community High School is seeking an inspiring and dedicated Head of Religious Studies and Social Science to lead our thriving department. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic educator with a passion for Religious Studies and Social Sciences, and a vision for delivering an engaging, inclusive curriculum that fosters critical thinking and respect for diverse beliefs.

The Religious Studies and Social Science department plays a vital role in our school community, delivering Religious Studies, Citizenship, and PSHE at Key Stage 3, ensuring students develop a well-rounded understanding of cultural, social, and ethical issues from an early stage. Religious Studies is a popular and thriving option at both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, with strong uptake and excellent outcomes, reflecting the department’s commitment to high-quality teaching and learning.

You will be leading a dedicated and enthusiastic team of six specialists, who bring a wealth of knowledge, energy, and passion to the subject. This role represents an exciting opportunity to guide and inspire this talented team, further developing the curriculum and ensuring outstanding teaching and learning experiences for all students.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional classroom practitioner, ready to motivate students across all key stages and contribute to our ethos of academic excellence and personal development. As Head of Department, you will have the opportunity to shape a curriculum that encourages thoughtful discussion, cultural awareness, and ethical reflection while leading a committed team within the broader Social Sciences faculty.

We welcome applications from experienced leaders or ambitious teachers looking for the next step in their career. If you are committed to making a meaningful impact on young people’s lives and supporting our inclusive school community, we would love to hear from you.

What We Offer:

  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.
  • Bespoke, high quality professional development of nurturing talent and growing our own;
  • High expectations of behaviour supported by established systems and protocols;
  • Accelerated career opportunities for aspirational and talented staff; many of our middle leaders have been promoted internally and we have a range of TLR and bursary posts designed to develop leadership capacity in all teachers.
