Head of School job summary

Nestled in the stunning Eden Valley, Kirkby Stephen Grammar School combines centuries of tradition with a forward-looking approach to education. With approximately 350 students, including 60 in our thriving sixth form, we are a small school by design - allowing us to truly know and nurture every student who passes through our doors.

Our recent integration into Cumbria Education Trust marks the beginning of a transformative journey. The successful candidate will join at a pivotal moment, as our school becomes part of a collaborative hub of six schools in the locality. This presents an unparalleled opportunity to preserve the unique character of our close-knit community school while drawing on the collective strength and expertise of a leading multi-academy trust.

Our January 2024 Ofsted report celebrated our "friendly and caring community" where students feel safe and happy. We take pride in excellent attendance rates, exemplary behaviour, and strong relationships between staff and students. These foundations provide the perfect platform for an ambitious leader to shape the next phase of our development.

The role demands an exceptional educator who understands the special nature of rural community schools. You will be someone who can honour our heritage while embracing innovation, who can build upon our strengths while bringing fresh perspectives. As part of the Cumbria Education Trust leadership team, you will work collaboratively to deliver the Trust's vision of enabling every young person to reach their potential through innovative and inspiring learning experiences.

You will find in Kirkby Stephen Grammar School a place where traditional values meet modern thinking, where every child is known and valued, and where education extends far beyond the classroom. Working within CET's framework of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, you will have the opportunity to shape not just a school, but a community.

In return, we offer the chance to lead a good school with strong foundations, backed by the support and resources of a successful multi-academy trust. You'll benefit from established governance structures, excellent professional development opportunities, and the collegiate support of fellow leaders across the Trust.

If you are inspired by the prospect of leading a school where every student and staff member is known by name, where tradition meets innovation, and where community matters, we would love to hear from you.

Visits to the school are warmly welcomed and encouraged. For an informal discussion about this role or to arrange a visit, please contact Des Bird (dbird@cumbriaeducationtrust.org).
