What skills and experience we're looking for

An exciting opportunity for an inspirational Head of Science to lead our successful Science Faculty.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, top class Head of Science to lead our large and successful Science Faculty. The successful candidate will need to have experience of departmental or faculty management and a proven track record of delivering excellent public exam results over a period of time.

Interested candidates are invited to visit the school before making an application.

What the school offers its staff

The successful candidate will be joining a tight-knit community; the turnover at GCA is consistently low and the well-being of our staff is important to us. We aim to support staff to achieve a sensible work-life balance. All staff are different and supporting them requires an individual approach.

The personal development of all our staff is highly valued at GCA and we offer the opportunity to apply for our Learning Award of up to £2,400 per year for your continued professional development or other skills and talents. This is in addition to the school’s ongoing CPD programme. Other benefits staff can opt into include a cycle to work scheme and an interest-free annual season ticket loan.

Staff at the Academy collaborate and support each other by sharing good practice and taking a team approach with a focus on collective responsibility. Paul Sutton, our Principal, encourages teachers to have an impact beyond their subject and he is always available and happy to discuss ideas with you as to how this can be achieved. We have an impressive range of extra-curricular activities and all our staff are involved in running at least one.

Further details about the role

The Science Faculty at Greig City Academy:

The Faculty comprises Biology, Chemistry and Physics; it has a suite of ten modern, large and well-equipped purpose-built laboratories housing a team of thirteen Science teachers and two technicians.

This is a great time to be joining the GCA Science Faculty. Science is a highly regarded subject within the school: science results have significantly improved and there is a real buzz of enthusiasm throughout the faculty. The Science Faculty is a highly motivated team striving for excellence, with high expectations of both pupils and staff. Students are encouraged to think for themselves giving them the opportunity to make sense of the work around them.

GCA is a successful STEM school and the Science Faculty drive forward innovative teaching practices, placing high value on practical work. A range of well attended extra-curricular activities for students at lunchtime and after school - for example our KS3 science club and KS4 raising achievement sessions - are offered.

Commitment to safeguarding

Greig City Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we have safer recruitment procedures in place for the selection of staff. Successful applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and additional pre-employment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education statutory guidance.

In line with KCSIE updates, an online search will be conducted as part of our due diligence checks on shortlisted candidates.
