Main responsibilities:
To monitor the academic progress of the year group in order to secure and sustain effective learning so that students are ready for the next stage of learning at the end of the key stage.
Conduct frequent “learning walks/lesson visits” to monitor classroom standards.
Visit year groups (where timetable permits) during breaks and lunchtimes and make judgements on standards of behaviour during unstructured time and recommendations for improvement.
Anticipate “hot spot” lessons (cover, supply, weak practice) where identified students are likely to disengage and undermine classroom climate.
Use assessment data such as CATs, key stage 2 data, low stakes quizzing (DNAs), Assessment Points (APs) and data sweeps to inform an analysis of individual student progress and collective progress across each tutor group and the year group as a whole.
Have an overview of the range of barriers to learning that impact on student progress, with reference to behaviour for learning, in and outside of the classroom.
Understand the pedagogies required to meet the needs of SEND students depending on the nature of their SEND need in order to support staff where this poses a threat to classroom climate and student progress.
Liaise with the Senior Leader responsible for SEND to identify and embed SEND strategies within the Year Group and disseminate key messages
Understand the pedagogies required to meet the needs of disadvantaged/Pupil Premium students in order to support staff where this poses a threat to classroom climate and student progress.
Liaise with the Senior Leader responsible for PP and embed PP strategies within the Year group and disseminate key messages.
Understand the pedagogic practice and teacher behaviours required to maintain an optimal learning environment in order to support staff where this poses a threat to classroom climate and student progress.
Monitor disparity of performance among non PP, SEND and EAL students on the basis of gender and ethnicity.
Liaise with the Senior Leader responsible for Behaviour/culture to identify and disseminate best practice.
Meet with the Year Learning Mentor on a daily basis to identify students at risk of underperformance, fixed term and/or permanent exclusion and identify strategies to support them in their educational journey.
Working with the Learning mentor and Link Senior Leaders to conduct reintegration meetings with students and parents where timetable allows.
Report to SLT termly on the progress being made by students in the year group
Monitor the regular setting and quality of homework by managing the regular checking of ClassCharts.
Leadership and Management
Act as a role model for tutors by demonstrating high quality pastoral care and academic monitoring of students, continuous professional development and professional presence in the year team.
Lead and manage a team of tutors and maintain regular formal and informal contact with tutors.
Ensure all tutors understand, and are actively implementing the key aspects of the school’spolicies including those for behaviour, attendance, uniform and safeguarding.
Set the agenda for tutor meetings which should include a development item.
Make a significant contribution to the induction of tutors referring any individual training needs to the member of SLT with responsibility for staff development.
Maintain an overview of all the different care and guidance for students’ e.g. learning mentor, SENCO, teaching assistants, external agencies etc.
Provide a link for parents, tutors, SENCO, teachers, Heads of Department, SLT and external agencies.
Initiate and respond to communications with parents ensuring that they are kept fully informed and involved in the progress and conduct of their children.
Contribute to the organisation of any parent information evenings by encouraging and monitoring parent attendance to such events.
Working alongside the Mentor to monitor student attendance and punctuality on a weekly basis and to take all the appropriate steps to ensure that attendance and punctuality of students in the year group are at the highest levels.
Using ClassCharts and working alongside the Mentor, monitor student behaviour, attendance and achievement and decide on appropriate sanctions, interventions and rewards.
Alongside the Mentor, play the leading role in the disciplining of students referring situations to the appropriate member of SLT when appropriate.
Contribute to the management of key school events; for example induction, transfer
arrangements, trips, extra-curricular and social events.
Administration
Organise the framework for daily tutorial activities during formation time. This includes both day to day administrativetasks and year specific tasks (preparation for exams, options, learning conversations etc)
Ensure that all tutors have access to relevant materials in order to deliver high quality tutorial activities.
Maintain individual student records as necessary and ensure that they are kept up to date.
Working alongside the Mentor oversee ‘in year’ admissions for new students. This will include liaising with the member of staff responsible for admissions, meeting potential students and parents and in conjunction with key staff organising timetables and setting.
Monitor the settling in of new students.
Oversee the completion of school reports for the year group.
Work with form tutors to ensure appropriate follow-up to reporting procedures and to play an important part in the evaluation of reporting procedures.
Participate in policy development and decision making across the school.
Specific additional responsibilities will be dependent upon the year group.
