Head of Year job summary
The Governing Body would like to appoint a Head of Year to take a year group through Years 10 and 11 and then progress to a new year group.
Heads of Year have high status at Thornden and have a key role supporting high achievement and a positive ethos. Previous experience as a Pastoral Head is desirable and applicants must have the skills to fulfil a pastoral role in a comprehensive school.
Thornden has a well-established year based system through which the pastoral system is proactive in supporting the achievement of students and in promoting a positive ethos. At Thornden, therefore, the principle that pastoral systems should support academic progress as well as supporting pastoral issues is very long established. The pastoral system has high status within the school and the Pastoral Lead is Judith Evans, Assistant Headteacher, who line manages the Head of Year team.
At Thornden, each Head of Year leads a team of tutors and has their own office, located in a central area of the school. Tutor groups typically contain between 28 - 30 mixed ability students. Heads of Year monitor the academic and social development of the students in their year group. They maintain appropriate records, identify under-achievement and take active measures with individuals and groups to promote appropriate learning behaviours, outstanding achievement and a positive year group ethos. Heads of Year are also responsible for the tutorial programme which is delivered by tutors in a 30-minute period each Wednesday. A full job specification will be made available to shortlisted candidates.
Thornden is not a school where the Pastoral System is overwhelmed with crisis management, although crises certainly do occur. There is scope for active pastoral work, and for a Head of Year to implement new ideas. The person appointed should confidently expect backing and support from the other Year Heads and the Senior Leadership Team.
