Headteacher job summary

The Governors of Arboretum Primary School are looking to appoint an inspirational, forward-thinking Headteacher to lead our popular, diverse and welcoming Primary School in the heart of Derby.

Arboretum is a proud member of Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (www.ddat.org.uk) and enjoys a positive relationship with a team of professionals providing effective support in school improvement and operations.

At Arboretum, children are at the heart of all our work and our priority is to deliver high quality teaching and learning whilst at the same time providing rich and enjoyable learning experiences. Everything we do as a school is to ensure that the children ‘reach for the stars’ and achieve their very best: it is our job to ensure that they all reach for the highest levels of personal achievement and development.

We want every child to be successful; to reach for the stars from the very first day they join us so that when they leave us, they have a love of learning for the rest of their lives.

Are you already a serving Headteacher or a highly experienced Deputy Head, and eager for a new and stimulating challenge? You will be excited about operating in an environment where your ideas and enthusiasm can be directed to help develop your own school as well as have an impact across a vibrant and growing Multi-Academy Trust.

You are an enthusiastic and adaptable leader who:

  • Has regard and respect for the experiences, knowledge and cultural diversity that every child brings to school and use this as a foundation for improving standards;
  • Values the achievements of all children and provides opportunities to develop self-confidence and a positive self image;
  • Provides a supportive culture in which all staff are encouraged to extend, develop and share their expertise;
  • Offers all children equal access to the curriculum and all aspects of school life; where individual differences are appreciated, celebrated, understood and accepted;
  • Encourages children to become good citizens holding British values, by developing caring attitudes, tolerance and respect towards themselves, other children, adults, their school and their community.

In return we can offer you:

  • Happy children who are eager to learn;
  • Dedicated, hardworking and committed teaching and support staff;
  • A commitment to continued professional development;
  • A supportive Academy Trust and active Local Governing Body;
  • A happy learning environment with the chance to apply your ideas and skills to a school that is thriving and ready for you to take charge.

We are a large 635 place primary (which includes 32 children in our 2 year old unit and 78 in our 3 year old nursery), with a rich ethnic mix of delightful and well-behaved children. Our modern school has recently been refurbished and extensively extended and sits in large attractive grounds. We pride ourselves on our caring ethos and the value we place in our dedicated and friendly staff teams. We are a popular school, and have a waiting list for most year groups.

Arboretum is a Good school, as confirmed at our last Ofsted short inspection (November 2017). The inspectors felt that: “The pupils’ positive attitudes to learning and their respectful behaviour reflect the school’s values and the leaders’ good work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare”. Our school is very well resourced and we see the benefits of regular training and development of staff, ensuring they really do make a genuine difference to our children’s education.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is embedded across everything we do at Arboretum, including all stages of our recruitment and selection process. The successful candidate will require enhanced DBS clearance.
