Headteacher job summary

Thank you for your interest in working at Brickhill Primary School.

Our school is a caring community school for children between the ages of four and eleven, situated in a residential area to the north of Bedford. We are a diverse and inclusive school which provides an enjoyable and purposeful learning environment for all pupils. As a small one form entry school we are in a position to know all of our children and families well and understand their individual needs.

Our current headteacher Debbie Wilson has been part of the school since September 2012. During that time she has been a very hands-on headteacher and has seen the school transform from a lower school to a primary school. She has also worked tirelessly to ensure that the school is inclusive and that all children regardless of their backgrounds enjoy and thrive at school. She is now looking forward to her retirement where she can spend more time with her family and enjoy the odd round of golf!

We have a dedicated team of teachers and support staff who work enthusiastically and collaboratively to support our school development and to strengthen and improve the learning experience for all. There is a strong emphasis on working as a team and ensuring every individual feels supported.

As a maintained school, we work in partnership with the Local Authority who provide a great deal of support and training opportunities for our staff. You will also be supported by a committed governing body who have a wide range of expertise from their professional lives, as well as an excellent knowledge of the local community. There is an induction programme of support from the local authority for all headteachers new to Bedford Borough, which includes mentoring from an experienced headteacher of a local good or outstanding school for school improvement, and a trained peer Headteacher who can provide coaching for professional mental health and wellbeing.

Being a small school is wonderful and our families choose Brickhill Primary for their children because we are like one big family. But being a small school also means that finances are tight and so careful and resourceful budgeting is needed and ensuring our pupil numbers remain at full capacity is a high priority.

We were recently inspected by Ofsted in February 2024 and we rightly remained a good school. We are delighted that the report recognises all that we have achieved including developing our ambitious curriculum. We know that there is work to do now in embedding the curriculum in all subject areas to ensure that all staff are clear on specific subject knowledge that must be taught and that their lessons precisely meet the needs of all pupils.

The report also highlights that “pupils are courteous and thoughtful”, “older pupils act as role models”, “pupils are proud to attend here”, “adults are caring and supporting and invest time in getting to know pupils individually”.

We are very proud of our school with its dedicated staff, committed governors and fabulous children. We are also proud of the strong relationships we have with our parents, families and the wider community. We believe that every child can achieve, and staff know the individual pupils and their families extremely well. We prioritise pupil well- being and have a rich and exciting curriculum which includes a broad range of wider opportunities. We are always reflective and seeking to develop our practice.

We hope you have been able to visit the school website at Home - Brickhill Primary School for more information. We welcome informal visits to the school (in or outside of school time) or informal virtual meetings to discuss the role.
