Headteacher job summary

The Governors of St Ignatius College are seeking to appoint for September 2025 or January 2026 a headteacher to succeed Mrs Mary O’Keeffe who is retiring after nine very successful years in post.

The College is a voluntary aided comprehensive secondary school for boys aged 11 to 18 with a mixed Sixth Form located in the London Borough of Enfield with 1,000 students on roll.

The College is in the trusteeship of the Society of Jesus, the “Jesuits”, and aims to realise to the full the academic potential of all students and to help them become “men and women of faith who are men and women for others” who will go into the world and make it a better place.

St Ignatius College is a high achieving school. In 2024, the progress score at GCSE was 0.85, putting it in the top 2.5% of schools nationally and 80% of Sixth Form leavers were admitted to their first-choice universities. Governors are proud of the outcome of the February 2025 OFSTED inspection, the report of which will be published later in March 2025 and will be available on the school website. In 2023, the school was judged “outstanding” in the section 48 Diocesan Inspection.

While the school community values and preserves its rich heritage, it is forward thinking and innovative in preparing students for the demands of the 21st century. The College was founded in 1895 and is now preparing for its ‘second founding’. The new head will carry forward plans for academisation. Rebuilding of the entire school on the same site adjacent to its present location, including sports hall and swimming pool, fully funded by the DfE, is due to begin in the autumn of 2025 and to be completed in the autumn of 2027.

Governors are seeking to appoint an outstanding leader who has the ambition, enthusiasm and dedication to take the school onto the next stage of its development. Applications are welcomed from experienced head teachers or ambitious and highly skilled senior leaders who are keen to step into their first headship. We value diversity and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. The successful applicant will be committed to the distinct Jesuit ethos of the College.

The new headteacher will benefit from:

The support of the Society of Jesus and a committed, experienced governing body

A highly skilled and ambitious Senior Leadership Team who work alongside a motivated, caring and capable team of professional teachers and support staff who are dedicated to providing the best education and pastoral care that they can.

Committed families and enthusiastic and hardworking pupils who want to learn and take part in all aspects of school life

Stable finances and a well-managed budget

A fully funded building programme

We are seeking a Headteacher who will:

Be a practising Catholic and able to demonstrate a strong Catholic faith and be committed to the Catholic and Jesuit ethos of the school.

Ensure that the needs of every child are met and that they are inspired to meet their true potential.

Be passionate about teaching, learning and curriculum design in order to continue to develop our school and equip our students to have successful lives.

Provide clear and precise leadership, nurturing and inspiring others to achieve to the highest of standards.

Be a strong and inspiring communicator, able to engage all stakeholders in the next phase of the school’s journey.

Recognise that every role in the school contributes towards forming an inspirational centre of learning.
