Description of the school
The Royal Spa Nursery School is a truly special place to learn and work. Established in 1977 and set beside the historic Royal German Spa in Queen’s Park, the school offers a unique and inspiring environment for young children aged 2–5. It is a term-time-only nursery school, operating from 9.00am to 3.30pm.
The Royal Spa is a school-hours-maintained nursery school with 128 15-hour places, with children able to extend their universal entitlement to a 30-hour place. The school admits children each term and is consistently full in the summer term. Each session has capacity for 64 children, allowing for a calm, well-organised and purposeful learning environment.
The school’s exceptional outdoor grounds are central to daily life at Royal Spa, providing children with rich opportunities to explore, investigate, take risks, and develop confidence, independence and curiosity throughout the seasons.
At the heart of the school is a simple but deeply lived belief: every child is special. Kindness, inclusion and high expectations shape everything we do. Children learn through purposeful play in an environment that is carefully organised around their interests, needs and development, supported by an exceptional staff team including a SENCO, three part-time qualified teachers and eight part-time nursery nurses. The school is proud of its diversity and inclusive practice, working closely with families and professionals to ensure that every child feels valued, nurtured and able to thrive.
Royal Spa is an Outstanding, local authority–maintained nursery school with a strong reputation for excellence in early years education. Ofsted captured the spirit of the school in May 2024, noting that children “adore coming to Royal Spa Nursery School, where their days are filled with joyful play and fascination.” This warmth, joy and sense of belonging are felt throughout the community and make Royal Spa a rewarding and meaningful place to lead.
