What skills and experience we're looking for

Seeking a vibrant and bubbly character to support a charismatic young boy with his daily needs throughout his schooling.

We are currently in search of an experienced Healthcare Assistant to support a 9-year-old boy, William, who has complex care needs. This role is mainly based within his school setting but could also be in the family home.

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Healthcare Assistant who enjoys delivering one-to-one support and who can build positive relationships. They must have an outgoing and enthusiastic nature to further enhance William’s engaging personality.

William has a neuromuscular condition (SMA-Type 1). Because of his condition he is dependent on others to meet all of his care needs. From a respiratory point of view, he has a tracheostomy and is ventilated overnight although this can be needed for short periods in the day. He requires cough assist daily and oral/nasal and tracheal suction on a regular basis. Both William’s nutritional needs and medication is administered via a gastrostomy. Regular repositioning is required whilst supporting him.

Due to William’s condition, he relies heavily on others to meet all aspects of his care needs so it’s important that his care team can communicate with him and understand his wishes, desires and needs. Although he is unable to communicate verbally, he has no cognitive impairment and is a very clever young boy who can make his needs knows in other ways. It is therefore important that his care team interact with him like they would with any other child of his age.

This is a great opportunity for a committed individual who has a genuine interest in working with children and young people. The post requires meeting William at the family home and supporting him on transport to school. Once at school, his healthcare assistant will support him with all aspects of his medical and personal care needs throughout the school day. The school has a Registered Nurse who will be the main point of contact within school providing clinical support and supervision.

If William is unable to attend school, then there would be an expectation that his healthcare assistant would work within the family home to support him. In addition, they also may be supporting him to attend medical appointments with parents.

Our ideal applicant will be experienced in or have exposure to delivering complex clinical care however, this is not essential.
