What skills and experience we're looking for
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic and highly skilled staffing team at Mayfield College as a Healthcare Assistant. The post would ideally suit a current Healthcare Assistant who enjoys working within a school or clinical setting with young people with additional needs.
The post requires someone with GCSE Level qualifications or an equivalent level 3 qualification in health, education or child care. Previous experience of working with children with medical and special needs is desirable.
The intended job purpose is:
- To provide 1:1 care of the day-to-day needs of individual pupil(s) under the direction of healthcare professionals, the school’s nurse and SENDCo.
- To support teaching and other staff in assisting the delivery of the curriculum and other learning processes, in direct contact with pupils.
The post is full time, 30 hours per week, 39 week per year, (Term time only). Working hours will be 8.55am to 3.25pm.
We ask that all candidates have good base English and Maths skills.
We are looking for candidates who are keen, motivated and are able to work as part of a team.
You will support the teacher and class team in creating opportunities for our young people to learn in their own individual ways. You will need to be creative, flexible, patient, and perceptive, as you will need to write down observations for the teacher. However, as well as supporting the teaching, you will be trained by nurses, therapists and senior staff to carry out many other complex medical procedures.
The Right Candidate will have
- An enthusiasm to learn new skills in a school based environment.
- A good understanding of child development and learning processes
- Administering of medication orally/inhaled/via gastrostomy and supplies management between home and school
- High level of competency in other medial procedures including, enteral feeding, respiratory physio and epilepsy protocols and emergency management of epilepsy
- The ability to be a great team player and also be able to work independently and use initiative
- An open-minded and inquisitive approach to the job but the ability to work to agreed strategies and procedures
- The ability to develop and sustain positive relationships with children, fellow staff members and families
- Experience of using ICT effectively

These posts are subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and barred list check and other Safeguarding and Medical Checks. The interview will be a panel interview along with a written task and may include other tasks on the day.
All candidates will be required to provide two references which will be taken up if shortlisted but before interview.

At Mayfield College in Paignton we have 52 students in Key Stage 4 and 5 with severe and profound learning difficulties. The highly skilled College team provide a holistic programme of study for our young people which utilised challenging, relevant and fun learning experiences whilst supporting individual progression and preparation for adulthood.
At Mayfield Chestnut in Brixham we have 32 Primary aged pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties arranged in 6 classes. Our highly skilled staff support our pupils to maintain academic progress whilst securing attachment and promoting resilience and wellbeing through playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy.
