Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team.

In this rewarding role, you will work closely with teaching staff to deliver high-quality learning experiences, including leading whole-class lessons in the absence of a teacher and supporting small groups and individual pupils. You will play a key part in helping pupils achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

    • Deliver lessons to whole classes during planned and unplanned teacher absence
    • Plan, deliver, and evaluate learning activities for individuals, groups, and classes
    • Monitor pupil progress and provide clear feedback to support improvement
    • Support pupils’ literacy, numeracy, and wider curriculum learning
    • Adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse learning needs, including SEND
    • Promote positive behaviour, engagement, and emotional resilience

    Pupil Support

      • Support pupils’ academic, social, and emotional development
      • Help create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment
      • Contribute to pupil assessments and record-keeping
      • Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and carers where appropriate

      Teamwork & Leadership

        • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and wider school team
        • Provide guidance and day-to-day support to other classroom support staff
        • Contribute to school events and attend meetings and training sessions
        • Uphold confidentiality and safeguarding responsibilities at all times
        • General Duties

          • Supervise pupils during breaktimes as required
          • Prepare and use learning resources, including ICT tools
          • Support the planning and delivery of interventions

          Follow all school policies, including safeguarding and behaviour

          About You

          We are looking for someone who is:

          • GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
          • First Aid trained (or willing to undertake training)
          • Experienced in working with children or in a school setting
          • Skilled in planning and delivering learning activities
          • Strong literacy, numeracy, and organisational skills
          • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
          • Good understanding of safeguarding, SEND, and the curriculum
          • Confident using ICT to support teaching and learning
          • Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and resourceful
