Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team.
In this rewarding role, you will work closely with teaching staff to deliver high-quality learning experiences, including leading whole-class lessons in the absence of a teacher and supporting small groups and individual pupils. You will play a key part in helping pupils achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver lessons to whole classes during planned and unplanned teacher absence
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate learning activities for individuals, groups, and classes
- Monitor pupil progress and provide clear feedback to support improvement
- Support pupils’ literacy, numeracy, and wider curriculum learning
- Adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse learning needs, including SEND
- Promote positive behaviour, engagement, and emotional resilience
Pupil Support
- Support pupils’ academic, social, and emotional development
- Help create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment
- Contribute to pupil assessments and record-keeping
- Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and carers where appropriate
Teamwork & Leadership
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and wider school team
- Provide guidance and day-to-day support to other classroom support staff
- Contribute to school events and attend meetings and training sessions
- Uphold confidentiality and safeguarding responsibilities at all times
General Duties
- Supervise pupils during breaktimes as required
- Prepare and use learning resources, including ICT tools
- Support the planning and delivery of interventions
Follow all school policies, including safeguarding and behaviour
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
- First Aid trained (or willing to undertake training)
- Experienced in working with children or in a school setting
- Skilled in planning and delivering learning activities
- Strong literacy, numeracy, and organisational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Good understanding of safeguarding, SEND, and the curriculum
- Confident using ICT to support teaching and learning
- Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and resourceful
