HLTA job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is flexible, organised and is passionate about supporting the teaching and learning for young people who have medical or mental health needs. You will be required to oversee support for young people which involves communicating with parents and enrolled schools, as well as assisting in the delivery of an appropriate curriculum within a hospital school setting and support planning for re-integration. One of the crucial elements of the role is engaging young people when they are finding it difficult to focus by finding dynamic and spontaneous ways to involve them.

Work will initially be within our Outreach Teaching team which provides education across the county. All HLTAs within the outreach team work as aspire tutors which is a programme designed by staff within the school to support pupils one to one throughout their OTS journey, in a way that is flexible to their individual needs.

All of our HLTAs are paid at grade 9 as we wish to provide the highest quality of education and recognise the complexity of needs within our cohort. Experience working with high needs students or within special schools is desirable but we would also welcome applicants from other sectors who have relevant experience working with young people. A strong sense of social justice, ambition for young people and high levels of personal resilience are all qualities we value amongst our staff.

Our staff are subject to redeployment across all of our settings by this at the Oxford Children’s Hospital or the Highfield Adolescent Unit

As far as possible, our work focuses on supporting each young person to keep up with their enrolled school curriculum so that they feel prepared to return. The demands and pressures put upon young people during their treatment for their medical/mental health condition will vary and whilst applicants would need to be confident and empathetic in working with this profile of pupils, the team at the OHS is supportive and will provide opportunities to develop the right skills as necessary.

We would encourage and warmly welcome enquiries and will try to accommodate visits as best we can. Please contact Eva Marino, School Business Manager on eva.marino@ohs.oxon.sch.uk or tel 01865 957480 should you require any further information.

Full details are on our website at https://ohs.oxon.sch.uk/about-us/vacancies/. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and safety of children and young people and promoting equality of opportunity. Our Safeguarding Policy can be found on our website at https://ohs.oxon.sch.uk/information/policies-documents/. As part as our safer recruitment processes, we will be conducting an online search on any shortlisted candidates for publicly available information.
