What skills and experience we're looking for

St Mary’s expanded in September 2025 to become a primary school with a new integrated special school, The Tweed, which opened in January 2026. As part of this expansion, St Mary’s has been fully refurbished, with Key Stage 1 enjoying a new purpose-built learning environment. Additionally, further plans have been agreed to redevelop our extensive outdoor areas for Key Stage 1 and 2 over the next 12 months.

In our Year 1/2 mainstream class, the successful candidate will build upon the current successes, promoting an inclusive learning environment within our new Key Stage 1 unit, designed to support learning across all areas and for all children. The role requires a teacher who is hard-working, passionate, and committed to supporting all children to achieve their potential. We seek a teacher who children will remember and be inspired by long after they have left our school.

As part of the Tweed Learning Federation of schools, we remain committed to serving our individual communities. However, we benefit from sharing resources and support across the schools, allowing us to meet the needs of the children more effectively and efficiently. This collaboration enables staff to benefit from the shared practice of a large group of committed and enthusiastic colleagues.

The successful candidate will be an excellent classroom practitioner who is caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated. They will:

  • Work closely with all members of our team to ensure the very best outcomes for every pupil.

  • Have high expectations for all children, regardless of their needs.

  • Foster positive relationships with children, parents, governors, and staff.

  • Be fully involved in the life of our school.

We are fortunate to have a dynamic staff team that supports and leads each other in the development of the whole school, making a valued contribution to all aspects of school life. We never use the word ‘team’ lightly; being a team means having shared aims and doing things for each other, together and individually, to ensure the best for everyone.

If you are a dedicated educator looking to make a difference in the lives of children and contribute to a thriving school community, we would love to hear from you.

What the school offers its staff

  • In return, we can offer you the opportunity to join a successful school which has a strong inclusive ethos and an inherent drive for quality. Berwick St Mary's Primary is dedicated to delivering outstanding inclusive practice through a culture of co-production, experiential learning and growth, where parents and professionals work together to support the holistic development of the child. Our children are proud citizens within their local community, care for each other, are focused on learning and enjoy coming to school. We have an incredibly strong team and thrive on working together to improve access to education and outcomes for our children.

  • The school will provide a wide range of targeted training to ensure candidates are kept upto date with current practice and the specific needs of the children we work with.

Applications are invited from prospective candidates (including ECT's) who are able to demonstrate that they are able to meet the essential criteria set out in the person specification and who have the vision, values and tenacity to join an outstanding team and help continue the journey towards excellence.

Visits to the school are strongly encouraged so you can see the new building and meet the team, so please contact the school office to arrange an informal tour and discussion with the head teacher.
