KS1 Phase Lead job summary
The Role
As KS1 Phase Lead, you will take specific responsibility for the day-to-day management and organisation of Key Stage 1. You will be an excellent classroom practitioner who models high standards and has a tangible impact on educational progress beyond your own classroom. Key responsibilities include:
Leading & Managing: Developing and enhancing the teaching practice of staff within your phase through appraisal, line management and modelling good practice. You will also take responsibility for leading our Read Write Inc. Phonics programme across both KS1 and EYFS.
Curriculum & Pedagogy: Implementing our "Core Principles for Teaching and Learning," which are rooted in research and precise, intentional classroom practice.
Senior Leadership: Assisting in developing the strategic direction of the school as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
Inclusion & Wellbeing at Our Heart
We are a school that prides itself on restorative and inclusive practice. You must be dedicated to supporting all children including those with high needs within a mainstream environment, ensuring every child feels safe, respected, and capable of achieving excellence.
In return, we offer a culture that genuinely values your wellbeing:
Flexible PPA: We offer a flexible approach to PPA, allowing staff to request to work from home or take PPA in larger blocks (e.g., a full day every fortnight) to support a better work-life balance.
Staff Wellbeing: Our Wellbeing Policy includes guaranteed leadership time and a commitment to ensuring that workload is manageable.
River Learning Trust (RLT): As part of RLT, you will benefit from a wide network of professional development, a shared commitment to evidence-based practice, and the RLT Staff Charter.
Our Community
Our vision was co-created with children, staff, and governors to foster "creative, caring, and lifelong learners". We enjoy immense support from our parents and the wider community, working in close partnership to ensure our children thrive both at school and at home.
How to Apply If you are a resilient, forward-thinking leader who is ready to add something new to our school, we would love to hear from you.

Education has the power to change lives, communities and society for the better. At RLT we believe that we can achieve more for our pupils, trainees, staff and communities by working together rather than alone. Schools in RLT are united by a common belief in the benefits of working together, and by our commitment to shared principles.
OUR VISION is for our schools and SCITT to improve rapidly, continuously and sustainably: to be better faster together.
OUR ‘WHY?’ is that children and young people ‘only get one go’ in school and therefore as part of RLT we aim to ensure the best possible ‘go’ for our pupils.
OUR ‘HOW?’ is through the highest support and challenge for our schools and each other, underpinned by our principles.
Our employees benefit from a wide variety of support including extensive continuing professional learning and development opportunities, wellbeing and staff networks and access to Defined Benefit Pension Schemes (TPS and LGPS) for all staff. For more information on what it is like to work for the Trust, and the benefits you could access, please see our “Working in RLT” guide.
