We are sure you will quickly feel the friendly and positive ethos in the academy from both the staff and the children who would love to share their latest pieces of work and activities with you. We are a culturally rich city school with high aspirations for all of our children
Quality Teaching
Since opening as an Academy, West Town Primary has restructured its teaching team to provide smaller class sizes for many of our children, which enables a greater amount of quality first teaching to take place.
We are fortunate enough to have a team of good and outstanding teachers who through bespoke in house training are helping to develop the next generation of teachers in partnership with our CMAT teaching school.
We employ specialist teachers for Art, PE and Music to raise the quality of teaching and work produced, creating a sense of achievement and success for the children.
We also work in partnership with Teach East, Peterborough’s School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) course, providing inspirational and effective training to the outstanding teachers of tomorrow.
Environment
We have just moved into our fabulous new state of the art building which has some impressive new learning spaces for the children including dedicated cookery and art rooms, a dance and music studio and two halls. The unique design includes large breakout work spaces which can be used flexibly for whole class or group activities and provide stimulating library and ICT stations. We have dedicated feature walls which will enable us to celebrate the children’s learning and display some of their artwork which has contributed to our gaining of the silver arts mark. We are now hoping to develop the grounds further to provide a sensory garden and outdoor music space, dedicated ball court, climbing and adventurous activities and outdoor wildlife learning area.
We maximise progress and engagement in learning through adopting and refining learning techniques that work well for our children. There is a high emphasis on talk and questioning to enable children to think and reason deeply about their learning. Feedback, including marking is given a high priority as we use it effectively to move learning on, consolidate or relearn from mistakes immediately or in dedicated follow up sessions. We draw on the expertise of our specialist maths and science teachers to ensure that we are at the cutting edge of maths teaching and continuing to push our science learning having now gained the Gold Primary Science Quality Mark. We also use the basics of accelerated learning techniques through TASC and enterprise activities within and beyond the curriculum.
Our classes are all named after famous children’s authors to help build a literacy rich environment in which children are surrounded by high quality written information and language on a daily basis. We have already developed a strong reading culture in the school and are now refining it to ensure that children understand the deeper meaning of what they read.
A Sense of Success
The academy believes in children achieving well and feeling a sense of success, in order for all children to achieve well there is a high emphasis on the quality of art music and PE through the provision of specialist teachers in these areas to lead and push the boundaries of these subjects within the primary age groups, as well as the traditionally tested reading writing and maths and science.
We believe that children need to have the basic skills in place to access deeper learning so include daily reminder, rehearsal and refinement sessions on specific handwriting, calculation, tables, spelling, punctuation and grammar, to ensure that children develop fluency in these areas which enable them to access learning across the curriculum. The children are able to celebrate their steps of progress from their starting points and the longer term impact of this approach can be clearly seen in the amount of progress children make by the end of year six.
