Are you passionate about supporting children with special educational needs and helping them thrive? Do you have experience working 1:1 with pupils and a sound understanding of SEND? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role
We are seeking a motivated and caring Teaching Assistant to work on a dedicated 1:1 basis with students who have special educational needs. You will support individual pupils to access the curriculum, develop their independence, and participate fully in school life. You’ll work closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and other support staff to tailor learning, provide emotional and physical support as needed, and monitor progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual support for a pupil with SEND throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher and SEND team to adapt resources, deliver targeted support, and implement individualised plans.
  • Encourage the pupil’s independence, social interaction and positive self-esteem.
  • Observe and record progress, behaviours and attainment, feeding back to the teacher and SENDCo.
  • Attend relevant meetings, contribute to planning and support inclusive opportunities for the pupil in all areas of school life.

What we’re looking for

  • Previous experience working with children who have special educational needs, preferably on a 1:1 basis.
  • Knowledge of SEND, including an understanding of Down syndrome and associated learning/communication needs.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for making a difference in a child’s life and the ability to work with patience, sensitivity and flexibility.
  • Good communication skills, the ability to build strong relationships with pupils and colleagues, and a collaborative ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • Resilience and a positive approach to supporting a pupil’s opportunities in a busy school environment.
  • Qualifications such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant or equivalent are desirable though not essential if you strongly meet the experience and skills criteria.
