“The school ethos of ‘high standards, daring to dream, traditional values, success and personalised support’ is shared by all.”
“Leaders lead with integrity and determination. They are ambitious for all pupils. They do not use pupils’ chequered experience of education to excuse low standards. Instead, they demand the best from pupils.”
Attention Graduates, ECTs, anyone looking for a career change, this could be the post for you. We are able to consider job shares, part-time working and short, or long term contracts.
The Ladder School is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to join our team.
The Ladder School is an academy that is part of The Mercian Trust. The Ladder School is a Free School set up by the Trust to offer effective Alternative Provision for the young people of Walsall.
Learning Coaches work under the direction of the Senior Leadership Team and provide outstanding pastoral care and in class support to our students. The successful candidate will be expected to complete a range of duties including Key Working students, supporting students in lessons, attending meetings, being a key contact for parents/carers and ensuring staff have the right information to support the needs of the students in the classroom. The successful candidate will be responsible for a class of students and deliver Skills (Personal Development) activities to their group. Additional training and meetings will be required after school as directed by SLT.
Learning Coaches are a vital role within our school and support teaching staff to transform students so they are successful members of their communities. Learning Coaches will be required to cover short term staff absences under the direction of SLT and will support all staff to ensure that students are effectively safeguarded. Learning Coaches are responsible for their groups of students at lunchtimes. This is an exciting time to join our team as we have just moved into our purpose built school.
As we are an expanding school, due to growth in student numbers, this is an exciting time to join The Ladder School.
The applicants should have experience of dealing with students who display challenging behaviour and should have worked in a relevant educational setting. All applicants must have a minimum qualification of Grade C/4 in English and Maths at GCSE level.
Staff should have a real interest in both the academic and pastoral aspects of education and should be committed to working as part of a close-knit, supportive team.
Being on the DBS update service would be an advantage, but not essential, so the successful applicant would be able to start promptly.
What the school offers its staff
Based on the edge of Walsall town centre there are excellent links to the local and wider community. The Ladder School operates under a commissioning model, where local mainstream schools will identify students at risk of permanent exclusion and will move them to The Ladder School, to transform their behaviour and enable them to be successful in their future. These students have struggled in mainstream education environments and benefit significantly from the smaller class sizes and additional support on offer at The Ladder School.
Commitment to safeguarding
The Ladder School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people/vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A copy of the ‘Safeguarding Policy’ is available to view or download by logging onto the School website: www.theladderschool.org.

We are an Alternative Provision Free School located in Walsall Town Centre. The Ladder School was established in January 2019 and has now moved in to a brand new, purpose-built building based on the edge of Walsall town centre where there are excellent links to the local and wider community. Over the coming years we will continue to grow and become the ‘go to place’ for alternative provision in the borough.
At The Ladder School, we recognise that mainstream school does not suit all young people and we are here to offer a second chance. We work on a commissioning basis, that means that a school or the Local Authority must approach to place a student. Unfortunately, we cannot accept direct referrals from parents/carers.
The staff work incredibly hard to ensure our students make the most of the opportunities that they get whist they are with us. Unlike other alternative provisions, we offer a range of GCSE courses, supplemented with some vocational courses to ensure students get a well-rounded education.
We are a positive environment, that uses praise and encouragement to enable our students to see things differently. We have a set of values that underpin everything we do.
