Are you a mainstream or SEN Teaching Assistant, or experienced in adult social care who is looking for a term time role in a unique school or college setting? Do you have an interest in learning BSL but have never had the chance before? The Deaf Academy is recruiting for Learning Leaders to join our school or college team in September, supporting Deaf students in our academy. This is a fantastic opportunity to change the lives of Deaf students while developing your own skills – the Academy delivers in house BSL qualifications during work hours, so you can learn on the job!

You will be supported and developed as part of a passionate, skilled team, who do their utmost to inspire and enable our young people to thrive. You will be supporting young people to achieve their academic ambitions but also prepare for independence. Alongside assisting the Classroom Teacher in planning, monitoring, assessments and effective teaching and learning of all students.

As part of this role you will provide specialist support and/or interventions with children and young people in academic subjects, addressing the needs of students who need help to overcome barriers to learning and behaviour. Alongside assisting the Classroom Teacher in planning, monitoring, assessments and effective teaching and learning of all students. Staff are well supported through our weekly CPD sessions, and in being sponsored through BSL qualifications to help your professional development

You will be based within our purpose-built facility in Exmouth. This new world-class Academy will change the lives of Deaf students. It will break down barriers to Deaf young people, bring communities together and enable families to thrive.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute effectively to teacher planning and preparation of lessons
  • Monitor student’s participation and progress, providing feedback to teachers and giving constructive support to pupils as they learn
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to support their learning
  • Promote and support the inclusion of deaf pupils and all pupils in their learning activities
  • To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young adults responsible for (or come into contact with) in accordance with the Academy Policy & Procedures
  • Contribute to planning, recording and implementation of Student Support Plans
  • Key requirements:

  • A commitment to learn about deaf awareness and attend training to support a total communication approach including BSL, AAC and other relevant communication methods to meet the students' needs
  • Experience of working within an Education setting
  • Ability to relate well to students, colleagues, other professionals and parents
  • Working knowledge of National/foundation stage curriculum and other relevant learning strategies
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of students/young people
