Learning Support Assistant job summary

Learning Support Assistants (LSA’s) play an essential part in the life of the school, both in and out of the classroom situation. The primary function for the post holder is to work at the direction of the teacher to whom they are assigned and assist in providing support to the children in the class. We also encourage support staff to bring their own expertise and interests into the school and to serve to enhance curriculum opportunities for the children at lunch times and after school.

Support staff are required to spend part of the lunch period each day with the children. This involvement will either be direct supervision during the meal or the provision of an activity for the break session prior to afternoon school and playground and corridor supervision. You are also expected to participate in a Rota for the supervision of morning breaks.

All adults in the school undertake very demanding pastoral responsibilities for the children in our care. The need for understanding, sensitivity and consistency in working with our children is paramount if we are to address their social and emotional skills.

Specific Duties (LSA):

1. To build meaningful working relationships with pupils and colleagues based on trust, respect and unconditional positive regard.

2. To work with and at the direction of teachers in the classroom setting and/or in conjunction with other timetabled activities.

3. To provide support and individual direction for children in the classroom both with regard to their academic work and their social/emotional/ behavioral needs.

4. To assist teaching staff in the preparation of materials and resources and to play an active part in ensuring that classroom displays are appropriately maintained.

5. Either to supervise lunch with the children (1pm – 1.25pm) on a daily basis or to provide a lunchtime activity from 1.25pm – 1.50pm. This arrangement is by mutual negotiation with the Head of School and is subject to ongoing review.

6. To provide morning break time supervision on a rota basis.

7. To provide support for individuals and small groups at the direction of teaching staff, the Head Teacher or Deputy Heads of School.

8. To set an appropriate role model for our pupils.

9. To assist teaching staff with administrative tasks.

10. To assist with or lead the provision of a breakfast club.

11. To fully comply with and implement all school policies.
