What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for candidates who are keen, motivated and are able to work as part of a team.

You will support the teacher in creating opportunities for the children to learn in their own individual ways. You will need to be creative, flexible, patient, and perceptive, as you will need to write down observations for the teacher. However, as well as supporting the teaching, you will be trained by nurses, therapists and senior staff to carry out many other day to day and medical procedures. Previous experience is desirable, but not essential as on-the-job training will be provided.

The Right Candidate Will Have

  • An enthusiasm to learn new skills in a school based environment.
  • A good understanding of child development and learning processes
  • The ability to be a great team player and also be able to work independently and use initiative
  • An open-minded and inquisitive approach to the job but the ability to work to agreed strategies and procedures
  • The ability to develop and sustain positive relationships with children, fellow staff members and families
  • Experience of using ICT effectively

Working hours will be 8.40am to 3.40pm, Term time only.

The starting salary for a Level 2 Teaching Assistant, based on 5 days a week (actual) is £16,119.85 per annum, paid equally across 12 months.

At Mayfield School in Torquay we have 180 pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties arranged in 19 classes from foundation through to Key Stage 4. At Mayfield College in Paignton we have 52 students in Key Stage 4 and 5 with severe and profound learning difficulties. The highly skilled College team provide a holistic programme of study for our young people which utilised challenging, relevant and fun learning experiences whilst supporting individual progression and preparation for adulthood.

At Mayfield Chestnut in Brixham we have 32 Primary aged pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties arranged in 6 classes. Our highly skilled staff support our pupils to maintain academic progress whilst securing attachment and promoting resilience and wellbeing through playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy.
