Level 3 SEND Teaching Assistant job summary
As a Level 3 Teaching Assistant with a SEND specialism at LEAF@Roughwood, you'll be a vital part of our team, focusing on supporting our amazing children with autism and communication needs in Early Years and Key Stage 1. Your unique skills and understanding of autism will help these children thrive, learn, and feel included in their daily school life and the wider EYFS curriculum. The role will involve preparing, delivering, and adapting bespoke activities for individual pupils, fostering their engagement, regulating their emotions, and promoting their overall well-being within the classroom and school environment. The post holder should have demonstrable experience in supporting children with autism.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Individualised Pupil Support: You'll support the unique strengths of children with autism and help create an inclusive, accepting environment that values neurodiversity. This includes adapting the curriculum to meet their specific needs, using differentiated instruction, alternative methods, and assistive technologies.
- Skill Development: You'll help children develop self-advocacy skills, encouraging them to express their needs and preferences. You'll also assist in implementing social skills activities to promote positive interactions with their peers.
- Creating a Supportive Environment: You'll help create a structured, predictable, and sensory-friendly learning environment. This involves using visual schedules and consistent communication strategies to enhance engagement and reduce anxiety. You will also provide personalised sensory supports.
- Implementing Intervention Strategies: You'll assist in implementing evidence-based strategies such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Attention Autism.
- Collaboration: You'll collaborate closely with the Class Teacher, SENCO, parents, and other professionals to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to supporting each child.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Pupil Progress: You'll help plan and deliver suitable activities based on individual child needs and maintain a system for monitoring and assessing progress.
- Tracking and Evidence: You'll assist in setting and tracking targets to support pupils' learning, keeping evidence files of their progress and outcomes.
- Communication: You'll provide regular feedback to the SENCO and the Class Teacher on pupils' progress based on their individual targets and support the development of their Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Parent Communication: You'll assist in liaising with parents and carers by sharing progress and discussing targets, encouraging them to support their child’s learning.
Professional Growth and Teamwork
- CPD and Reflection: You'll demonstrate a commitment to reflecting on and improving your own practice. You should stay up-to-date on the latest research and best practices in autism intervention by attending workshops and reading relevant articles.
- School Community: You'll work together as part of the team to plan an engaging curriculum and support well-planned educational visits. You'll also contribute to extra-curricular activities as needed.
- Ensure that a high standard of care and good order for all children is maintained, and actively promote and safeguard the welfare of all children.
- Carry out any other duties, commensurate with the post, as deemed appropriate during the school year by the Headteacher or SENCO.
- Adhere to all school policies and procedures.
