Responsible to the Head of Department
The purpose of this role is to be responsible for the partnership between Axiom Maths and Springfield School, overseeing the successful implementation and long-term delivery of the Axiom Maths programme.
The role focuses on identifying high prior attaining mathematicians, particularly pupils from under-resourced backgrounds, who may be at risk of not reaching their potential. The Mathematics Experience Coordinator will support these pupils as part of their journey with Axiom Maths, nurturing their love for mathematics and helping them achieve success at GCSE and beyond.
1 Principal Responsibilities
Promote maths circles to incoming Years 7 pupils, with a focus on pupils from under-resourced backgrounds.
Promote the Axiom Maths programme to all stakeholders (e.g. governors, parents, senior leaders with responsibility for pupil premium, wider maths department), fostering strong engagement and support for pupils’ ongoing mathematical development.
Select a cohort of pupils who are high attaining in maths and enthusiastic about maths.
Ensure at least 30% of pupils attending Axiom Maths circles are eligible for pupil premium.
Establish the Axiom Maths programme in school, with a view to adding a new Year 7 cohort every year, subject to the continuation of the programme/funding.
By the second year of partnership, be delivering maths circles in Year 7 and Year 8.
Once circles have been established in Year 7 and Year 8, and with additional support from Axiom Maths, ensure existing circles continue with the goal of having a circle in each year group by the 5th year of delivery.
Ensure that pupils, especially those from under-resourced backgrounds, continue to attend and participate in maths circles, maintaining a viable circle size of at least 6 pupils. This will include identifying and removing barriers to continued participation.
Participate in induction training at the start of the programme and the re-contracting webinar at the end of the year. Attend other recommended Axiom Maths training as appropriate.
Ensure maths circles are run with fidelity according to Axiom principles. Where volunteers are used, ensure they are trained and fully supported to assist with the running of maths circles.
Ensure completion of the Axiom Maths curriculum (i.e. aiming that 30, 1-hour maths circle sessions are completed each academic year per year group).
Serve as Axiom Maths’ contact within the school, ensuring timely follow-up on email correspondence.
Keep up to date with Axiom Maths updates, including those shared in the monthly newsletter.
Act as a champion for wider initiatives that embed a culture where excellence in maths is prized.
Engage with Axiom Maths about other opportunities to embed a culture where excellence in maths is prized, including accessing the wider Axiom Maths toolkit of opportunities.
A critical aspect of the role of Mathematics Excellence Coordinator is to reflect on and help shape the design of the Axiom Maths programme for current and future learners. To support this, the coordinator needs to:
Ensure timely completion of mentors’ and pupils’ surveys.
- Ensure pupil data is updated regularly on the Axiom Maths Hub (e.g. attendance).
- Ensure mentors participate in one Axiom Maths focus group per year.
- Coordinate at least one maths circle visit from Axiom Maths per year.
2 Person Specification
Key qualities we would hope to see in a Mathematics Excellence Coordinator include:
Experience
- Significant maths classroom teacher experience.
- Experience of transforming a classroom culture.
- Experience teaching high-attainers (e.g. top set pupils).
- Experience providing CPD for other teachers.
- Experience managing and/or leading others.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to develop innovative strategies to ensure pupils remain engaged in a culture where excellence in maths is prized.
- Strong mathematical knowledge (e.g. undergraduate degree in maths).
- Science, and/or excellent A-Level Maths/further maths results.
Character and Qualities
- Passionate about social mobility and providing opportunities for young people from under-resourced backgrounds.
- A love of mathematics and the determination to nurture this in others.
- Reflective, adaptable, and eager to develop new knowledge and skills, both mathematical and pedagogical.
3 Miscellaneous Notes
From time to time, teachers may be required to teach outside of their first subject. If this is required, then appropriate subject support will be made available.

You will be based predominantly at Springfield School. However, as you will be appointed to The De Curci Trust, you may be required to work in any of The De Curci Trust’s academies or in any of the schools/academies that the Trust is supporting as reasonably directed by the CEO. The ability to travel independently between DCT academies/schools is therefore essential.
