What skills and experience we're looking for
Key Responsibilities will include:
- Establish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils of all abilities, needs and ages, rooted in and encouraging mutual respect that significantly develops learning
- Set goals and targets based on an in-depth knowledge of individual and groups of pupils that enthuse, motivate and challenge all pupils
- Effectively promote and demonstrate the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of pupils
- Be accountable for continuously high levels of pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomes
- Demonstrate a clear knowledge of pupils’ individual capabilities and their prior knowledge and plan teaching to build on these. Create opportunities for pupils to reflect on the progress they have made and enable them to set individual targets to significantly develop their performance
- Demonstrate excellent knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn and how these impacts on teaching, implementing this in classroom teaching and sharing this with
other staff
- Inspire pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study, enabling them to help develop as independent learners and support the learning
Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
- Have an up to date and excellent/extensive knowledge of the curriculum, including the different types of qualifications and specifications and their suitability for meeting
learners’ needs to foster, and maintain pupils' interest in your subject and address misunderstanding
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in the subject and Curriculum area and promote the value of learning
- Promote collaboration and develop high standards of numeracy and literacy, in your subject area and cross-curricular activities Plan and teach well-structured lessons
- Embed knowledge and develop high levels of understanding through clear and effective objectives and effective pace of learning in lesson time
- Promote and encourage a love of learning and stimulate and develop children’s intellectual curiosity
- Set challenging and differentiated independent learning (Homework) and plan other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend the knowledge and understanding

- Reflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching, collaboratively developing own and other’s teaching practice to improve the learning of pupils.
- Use effective assessment processes within the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory assessment requirements to develop learning
- Make effective use of formative and summative assessment to ensure high levels of pupils’ progress in line with the Academy assessment and marking structures
- Effectively use relevant data to monitor progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessons for the promotion of high levels of learning
- Give individual pupils regular, effective feedback, both orally and through a range of marking and feedback strategies, enabling pupils to respond to the feedback Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies as per academy policy
- To carry out the above duties in accordance with the academy’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Safeguarding Policy
- To develop purposeful relationships with each faculty and team within the academy
- To always adhere to professional and staff codes of conduct
- To undertake any reasonable requests as negotiated with line manager or Headteacher
- To participate in Performance Management reviews

Westwood College is a mixed, non-denominational academy for students aged 13-19. Located in Leek, a market town in the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands, it has roughly 800 students.
Set in the grounds of a stunning 17th century manor house, Westwood College is part of the Talentum Learning Trust. Made up of 9 schools within and around the town, the Trust’s mission is to support and enable all learners to believe in themselves, to succeed in life and to aspire to be all that they can be.
The ethos of Westwood College centres around ‘Respect, Resilience, Ambition and Pride’. The school has aimed to build a community based on tolerance, sensitivity and an appreciation of difference. It commits to providing a broad, varied and stimulating education that is also personalised to meet the needs of each individual student. Students are encouraged to be part of decision making in their college life, to value the opportunities offered to them by the school, and to fully engage with their learning.
Outcomes for students at Westwood College are strong. In 2019 at Level 2, 74% of students achieved English and Mathematics at grade 4 or above and 45% at grade 5 or above.
Following their short inspection in February 2019, Ofsted recognised Westwood College as a ‘welcoming, friendly school. Pupils and sixth-form students are happy here because they say that they are treated as adults and feel their voices are heard. They develop a strong sense of equality and fairness.’ Teaching was noted as being ‘engaging and creative in many subject areas, which motivates most students to work hard and achieve well. The quality of students’ work in many cases is extremely high.’
