What skills and experience we're looking for

JOB PURPOSE

  • To assist in the support and integration of children with special educational needs within a mainstream school

  • To work proactively with children identified with their emotional needs, impacting their access to school and personal development. To respond to daily issues which prevent children accessing their learning in class.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To actively promote the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy and observe the standard of conduct which prevents discrimination taking place

  • To maintain awareness of and commitment to the School’s Equal Opportunity Policies in relation to both employment and service delivery

  • To fully comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 etc, the School’s Health and Safety Policy and all locally agreed safe methods of work

  • At the discretion of the Head Teacher, such other activities as may from time to time be agreed consistent with the nature of the job described above

  • To work with colleagues to achieve service plan objectives and targets

  • To participate in Employee Development schemes and Performance Management and contribute to the identification of own needs.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Supporting the Pupils

  • To support class teachers in regulating children’s emotions and manage behaviours

  • Draw on knowledge of various strategies and develop an understanding of the specific needs of the child/ren concerned

  • Taking into account the special needs involved, to aid the child/ren to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

  • clarifying and explaining instructions

  • ensuring child is able to use equipment and materials provided

  • motivating and encouraging child as required

  • assisting in weak areas eg language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting/presentation, listening skills etc

  • helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set

  • meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence

  • liaising with class teacher/year group devising complementary learning activities.

  • To run some lunchtime activities for vulnerable pupils

  • To proactively support Lunchtime Supervisors (LSAs) to develop a positive lunchtime throughout the school

  • To establish a supportive relationship with all children – particularly those with additional needs

  • To encourage acceptance and integration of the child with additional needs

  • To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing children’s self-esteem

  • To work with individual children or small groups of children as appropriate

  • To work with children who have EHCPs for learning, physical or emotional needs

  • Treat any sensitive information about the children you are working with in confidence

  • Attend and contribute as appropriate to annual review meetings of children with additional needs

  • To assist the class teacher (and other professionals as appropriate), in carrying out a suitable programme of support for children with special needs

  • To participate in the evaluation of the provision where appropriate, including providing feedback during Pastoral Team meetings

  • To provide regular feedback about the child to the teacher/special needs co-ordinator

  • To consult with outside agencies (i.e. educational psychologist, speech therapist, etc) about the child’s progress when the class teacher/special needs co-ordinator regards it as appropriate

  • To assist the teacher in the preparation of differentiated materials /resources

  • To attend and participate in any meetings appropriate to the role.

Supporting the school

  • To advise and support parents whose child are regular absentees

  • To contribute to reviews of pupil’s progress

  • To identify and attend relevant in-service training. Provide feedback from training to staff as appropriate

  • Implement new/revised strategies where applicable

  • To be aware of school procedures

  • Work in any classroom in the school designated by the Inclusion Manager/SENCo

  • Carry out work assigned by the SENCo or classroom teacher.
