SALT Teaching Assistant job summary

Hours per week: 10 hours

Weeks Per Year: 38 weeks

The Role:

The SALT Teaching Assistant works under the supervision of the class teacher, SENCo and linked Speech and Language Therapist to support pupils with speech, language and communication needs.

The role focuses on delivering targeted speech and language interventions, supporting communication development across the curriculum, and promoting inclusive practice to enable pupils to access learning effectively.

Key Tasks:

Deliver structured speech and language programmes designed by a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) or SENCo.

Support pupils individually and in small groups to develop speech clarity, vocabulary, expressive and receptive language, social communication and interaction skills.

Implement and monitor specific communication targets from EHCPs, IEPs and therapy plans.

Use specialist strategies such as visual timetables, Now/Next boards, communication boards ETC.

Model high-quality language, extend pupil vocabulary and scaffold responses to promote language development.

Support pupils with speech sound difficulties through structured articulation and phonological awareness activities.

Provide social communication and interaction support, including turn-taking, conversation skills and emotional literacy.

About You:

Experience working with children with speech, language and communication needs

GCSE Grade A-C (or equivalent) in English and Maths

Understanding of child language development

Knowledge of speech sound development and phonological awareness
