School Business Manager job summary

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, proactive and highly motivated School Business Manager (SBM) to join our dedicated team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key strategic role within a successful and welcoming primary school.

This is a full-time position, with flexibility around how the hours are worked. We can offer one of the following working patterns:

  • 8:00am - 4:00pm working 4 days per week (with 30 min lunch)
  • 8:00am - 4:00pm working 5 days per week (with 30 min lunch)
  • Full-time weekly hours (37.5 hrs) condensed across 4 longer working days

We welcome applications from candidates able to start in either July or September 2026, offering flexibility to support existing commitments and notice periods.

Reporting directly to the Headteacher, the SBM is a valued senior team member and plays a central role in the effective day-to-day and strategic management of the school. You will lead and manage all non-teaching operations, including Finance, Human Resources, Premises, Health & Safety and whole-school Administration, helping to ensure that our children receive the very best educational experience in a safe, efficient and well-resourced environment.

This is a varied and rewarding position suited to someone who is organised, solution-focused and able to work both strategically and operationally within a busy school environment. Further information about the role and responsibilities can be found in the attached Job Description and Person Specification.

The successful candidate will also attend six Full Governing Board meetings and three Finance, Personnel and Premises Committee meetings each year, which are usually held in the evening.

Following our Good Ofsted judgement in March 2025, we are proud to be a positive, ambitious and forward-thinking school community with children at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for someone who shares our commitment to excellence and our belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We can offer you

  • A warm, welcoming and highly supportive team culture where collaboration, wellbeing and professional respect are genuinely valued
  • A rewarding leadership role where your contribution will have a direct and meaningful impact on the continued success of the school
  • Excellent professional development opportunities, including high-quality training, mentoring and career progression within an educational setting
  • A term-time only working pattern (39 working weeks, including INSET days), offering an excellent work-life balance with approximately 13 weeks of school holidays each year to spend with family, travel or recharge
  • Access to the excellent benefits of working in a school, including membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, alongside nationally aligned pay and conditions
  • Access to a comprehensive staff wellbeing package through our Schools Mutual membership, including confidential counselling support, physiotherapy services, mindfulness and relaxation programmes, menopause support and a 24/7 GP helpline
  • A strong commitment to staff wellbeing and work-life balance, with access to leadership wellbeing support, professional coaching and wellbeing resources designed specifically for school staff and leaders
  • Happy, motivated and well-behaved pupils who are enthusiastic about learning and take pride in their school
  • A caring, inclusive and community-focused school with strong relationships between staff, pupils, parents and the wider community
  • A positive working environment where staff wellbeing, teamwork and work-life balance are actively supported
  • The opportunity to work alongside an experienced leadership team and committed governing body within a school that is committed to continuous improvement and high standards

We recognise the importance of supporting the wellbeing of school staff and are committed to creating a positive, sustainable and supportive working environment where colleagues can thrive professionally and personally.

The salary range is M1-M2 (points 32-40): £42,839 - £51,356 (actual salary, based on experience and agreed working pattern). The role is term time plus five INSET days (39 working weeks).
