What skills and experience we're looking for

Mayfield School is a large special school for pupils aged 3-19 years old and it is designated to provide an education for pupils with Severe and Profound learning disabilities and for primary aged children with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs).

The governing body sets the vision, values, ethos and strategic direction of the school and works closely with staff to ensure that the strategic vision is realised. The work of the governors focuses around three key areas:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • holding executive leaders to account for educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • overseeing financial performance and making sure money is well spent.

We are looking to increase our membership and to complement the existing skills set of the governing body. Ideally you will have experience or a background in either education, health care, finance, facilities management, legal or human resources. However, if you believe your skills or knowledge could benefit and help shape the future direction of our school and then we would really like to hear from you.

The Governing body currently meet using a blend of virtual and face to face meetings. The meetings are held on Monday's at 3.30pm and usually last 2 hours depending on content. The face to face meetings are held at Mayfield School. There are around 6-10 meetings per year and other commitments throughout the year.

We ask that you are willing to give the necessary time and commitment to role and that you bring a skill or particular set of knowledge to the group. We are looking for individuals who will be an advocate for the school but will also challenge our thinking and practices to ensure we are the very best that we can be.

At Mayfield School in Torquay we have 180 pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties arranged in 19 classes from foundation through to Key Stage 4. We have highly skilled staff and fantastic facilities to support the ongoing development of every pupil’s EHCP need in a safe, nurturing and happy environment.

At Mayfield College in Paignton we have 52 students in Key Stage 4 and 5 with severe and profound learning difficulties. The highly skilled College team provide a holistic programme of study for our young people which utilised challenging, relevant and fun learning experiences whilst supporting individual progression and preparation for adulthood.

At Mayfield Chestnut in Brixham we have 32 Primary aged pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties arranged in 6 classes. Our highly skilled staff support our pupils to maintain academic progress whilst securing attachment and promoting resilience and wellbeing through playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy.
