What skills and experience we're looking for

The Ridgeway School Governing Board is looking for 2 new external governors to join our team of dedicated volunteers. We are seeking individuals who has a genuine interest and commitment to education with the right skills and experience to deliver effective governance.

School governors are the unsung heroes of our education system. They are one of the biggest volunteer forces in the country, working in their spare time to promote school improvement and to support head teachers and teachers in their work.

The Governing Board provides strategic leadership, robust accountability, oversight, and assurance for educational and financial performance of the school.

Its core functions are to ensure that:

  • the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined,
  • the headteacher performs their responsibilities for the educational performance of the school, and
  • the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.

What the school offers its staff

Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) reflects that the quality of governors’ work is a very important. Inspection evidence tells us that there is a link between effective governance, the quality of leadership and management, and the quality of educational provision and pupil success.

As a Governor, you will be supporting your local community, as well as utilising your own transferable skills and experience in another environment.

Being a governor requires a serious degree of commitment in terms of time to attend meetings and a willingness to learn.

All Governors are required to join the Full Governing Board which meets six times an academic year (on Tuesday evenings at 7.00pm) and to join either the Curriculum & Standards Committee or Resources Committee which also meets six times a year (on Wednesday mornings at 9.30am).All meetings are hybrid.

We also expect new Governors to undertake initial induction training to understand their roles and responsibilities, and thereafter, commit to on-going professional development including annual Safeguarding training. New Governors are assigned a mentor to help them to develop and understand the role.

We very much welcome interest from under-represented groups

For further information about the roles and responsibilities of governors please look at the DFE’s Governance Guide -https://www.gov.uk/guidance/governance-in-maintained-schools/1-effective-governanceFor more information on becoming a Governor please contact:
