School Transport – Minibus Driver job summary
This job description describes in general terms the normal duties which the post-holder will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the post. The performance of all duties and responsibilities shown below will be under the reasonable direction of the Co-Headteacher. The Co-Headteachers will be mindful of their duty to ensure that the employee has a reasonable workload and sufficient support to carry out the duties of the post. This job description will be reviewed at least annually.
Duties
To be responsible for the safety and well-being of pupils, to ensure their safe arrival at school or home as appropriate. To observe the procedures contained in the Orion Academy Vehicle Policy.
Taking responsibility for checking with relevant staff / Staff Room board / Admin Office / WhatsApp regarding any last-minute changes and responding flexibly and effectively to changes.
To raise any concerns or issues relating to students with a senior member of staff as a matter of urgency, and in line with Safeguarding Procedures when appropriate.
To model the behaviours and attitudes expected from a school employee whilst driving, and when on the school site.
When not involved in transporting students, to proactively work within school to support learning on the school.
To be responsible for the health and safety of all passengers.
To be vigilant in ensuring that pupils travel on the correct transport to the correct destination.
To complete vehicle log books after each journey.
To monitor the fuel levels at the commencement of every journey and to fill up with fuel when the fuel level reaches one quarter full using the FuelGenie card. To provide the Finance Department with the fuel receipt promptly on return from refuelling.
To ensure that vehicles are left tidy and free of litter after each journey.
To inform the Site Manager if there are any faults in vehicles at the earliest opportunity.
To report all accidents and incidents at the earliest opportunity and to complete and verify all relevant documentation relating to these.
To administer first aid as appropriate.
To follow scheduled pick-up and delivery points.
To ensure any loads / luggage are secured.
To liaise closely with parents, teachers and carers.
To manage any breakdowns or other emergencies.
Other reasonable duties as defined by the school
Alongside the duties listed above, this role will havebuilt-in flexibility to support:
- Emergency or same-day journeys due to illness, behavioural incidents, or exclusion.
- Changes to student attendance (e.g., early finishes or variable timetables).
- Reduced time table students, particularly when sessions change quickly or extend beyond the school day.
- Situations where families cannot collect students due to cost or lack of access to a vehicle.
- If driving isn’t required at a specific time of the school day, the expectation will be for the post holder to provide support within the school.
The Co-Headteachers will ensure this flexibility is managed appropriately to ensure continuity of care and promotes engagement for vulnerable students.

General Responsibilities
Taking appropriate responsibility for one’s own health, safety and welfare and the health, safety and welfare of students, visitors and work colleagues in accordance with the requirements of legislation and locally-adopted policies; including taking responsibility for raising any concerns with an appropriate manager and for reporting accidents and incidents appropriately

Orion Academy currently offers places to 94 students, and the roll of the school will rise steadily over the next three years to cater for 108 students, aged from 10 to 18 years. Students attend from throughout the county, and transfer from our SEND feeder school, Northern House Academy, and from mainstream primary and secondary schools. All students who attend Orion Academy have an Education, Health and Care Plan, which describes their special needs and drives their educational provision.
Students are taught through a differentiated and bespoke curriculum designed to enhance their personal and social development and academic achievement. We have a strong intent to ensure our students leave with the personal characteristics to thrive in their communities. Classes are taught in stages, not necessarily age, allowing innovation and creative approaches to teaching and learning. The Academy provides support for our students with social and emotional needs through our Academy Community Learning Team, which consists of youth workers, therapeutic and pastoral workers.
