The Science Department

Our Science department is a friendly, supportive and high performing team of 9 teachers The department includes a combination of experienced and more recently-qualified staff. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.

The department is extremely well resourced. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team in frequent and highly effective episodes of guided practice to develop strong procedural knowledge and confidence for independent and deliberate practice. There is a substantial departmental office and the department is supported by two Science technicians and two 1:1 Science tutors.

The department is heavily invested in developing strong disciplinary knowledge at KS3 and KS4. We have a thriving Science club that aims to foster a passion for Science in the real world and equip students with the confidence and skills to be successful.

We are extensively involved with the Ogden Trust and this partnership has led to additional Science CPD for staff and facilitated Trust-wide competitions for our students within Science.

We share a strong whole-school literacy strategy that aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading and subject-specific tier 3 vocabulary. The department are passionate about speakingand writing like scientists. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive oracy strategy that is fully embedded within the department and across the academy.This is supporting writing confidence and competence, as well as arming students with exceptional speaking and listening skills.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for AQA GCSE combined science trilogy and singlesciences. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of Science directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.
