Science Technician job summary

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and organised Science Technician to support the effective delivery of the science curriculum through the provision of high-quality practical and technical assistance at Noel Baker Academy.

This is a key support role within the science department, responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of laboratory resources, ensuring that equipment and materials are prepared, maintained and available in a clean, safe and timely manner. You will play an important role in enabling high-quality practical learning experiences for students by supporting teaching staff with lesson preparation, demonstrations and classroom activities.

Working closely with the Curriculum Leader for Science, you will contribute to the coordination and development of practical resources and facilities, including monitoring stock, supporting budget control processes and maintaining equipment to a high standard. You will also ensure that all activities meet current health and safety requirements, carrying out risk assessments and remaining up to date with developments within science and laboratory practice.

The role also involves providing practical support to students during lessons, assisting less experienced staff in preparing and trialling experiments, and offering technical advice to teachers, technicians and pupils. In addition, you will support the wider work of the department, including extracurricular activities, extended services and the smooth running of workshops.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is highly organised, safety-conscious and passionate about supporting science education, with a commitment to ensuring that all students can access engaging and well-resourced practical learning.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a proactive, organised and knowledgeable individual with a strong understanding of laboratory practices and the ability to effectively support both staff and students within a busy science department.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working in a laboratory or educational setting, with a good understanding of practical science requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and the ability to apply these consistently within a laboratory environment.
  • Be skilled in preparing, maintaining and managing scientific equipment and resources to support effective teaching and learning.
  • Show the ability to organise and prioritise workloads, including managing stock levels, resources and competing demands.
  • Be confident in supporting practical lessons, including assisting students and less experienced staff with experiments.
  • Have the ability to carry out risk assessments and ensure safe working practices are maintained at all times.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills when liaising with staff, students and external organisations.

At Noel-Baker Academy, we are committed to delivering an exceptional education for every child. If you are an ambitious leader ready to make a significant impact, we would love to hear from you.

The role is advertised as part-time, working 14.5 hours per week across Thursday and Friday for 39 weeks of the year (term time only). However, we welcome applications from candidates seeking part-time work with different availability. Please include your preferred working pattern in your application, as we may be able to offer flexibility to suit the right candidate.
