Science Technician job summary

We are looking for a Science Technician to work as a part of a team of technicians supporting Science learning from KS3 to KS5. The successful candidate will support the delivery of high-quality practical lessons by preparing materials and equipment, maintaining laboratories and resources, and ensuring a safe and efficient working environment. You will work closely with teaching staff to meet the practical needs of the curriculum, manage stock and ordering, and contribute to the smooth running of the department. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong scientific knowledge, good technical skills and a commitment to supporting students’ learning.

Job Purpose:

  • Prepare and deliver materials, equipment and resources for science lessons and practical activities
  • Maintain science laboratories, preparation rooms, equipment and services in good working order
  • Coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities, liaising with teaching and support staff to meet curriculum needs
  • Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and long-term projects
  • Provide guidance, support and technical advice to teachers, students and trainee technical staff
  • Ensure a healthy, safe and compliant working environment
  • Organise day-to-day technical operations and support teachers during practical work when required

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

The post holder will: -

Organisation & Support for the Curriculum 

  • Prepare and organise resources, including assembling apparatus and producing reprographics
  • Carry out risk assessments for technician activities and contribute to lesson-related safety planning
  • Lead on stock control, ordering and supplier liaison, maintaining all relevant records. 
  • Ensure equipment undergoes regular checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repair to required standards

Health & Safety 

  • Contribute to the assessment, monitoring and review of health and safety procedures and information resources
  • Keep up to date with current practices through continuing professional development
  • Provide technical advice on health and safety matters to teaching and trainee technical staff
  • Ensure safe storage, handling and disposal of materials, including hazardous substances
  • Respond appropriately to actual or potential hazards and ensure safe accessibility of equipment and materials

Resources, Budget, Stock & Ordering 

Resource Management 

  • Prepare, maintain and organise equipment, chemicals and materials for practical lessons 
  • Ensure all resources are safe, functional and suitable for planned activities
  • Advise teaching staff on resource availability and adapt or develop materials to support curriculum needs

Budget Responsibilities 

  • Work within allocated departmental budgets when sourcing equipment and materials
  • Provide cost estimates for practical activities and planned purchases
  • Assist in planning future resource expenditure and pursue cost-effective options without compromising safety or quality

Stock Control 

  • Monitor stock levels of consumables, chemicals and equipment
  • Maintain accurate inventory records, including those required for hazardous materials
  • Use stock-rotation systems to reduce waste and maintain resource quality
  • Identify shortages early to prevent disruption to teaching

Ordering & Procurement 

  • Source suppliers and obtain competitive quotes
  • Place orders in accordance with school procurement procedures
  • Track orders and verify that deliveries match purchase requests
  • Maintain order forms, receipts and relevant documentation, including safety data sheets (SDS)

Knowledge and Expertise 

  • NVQ3 or equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant discipline
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Specialist training relevant to the role
  • Effective use of ICT systems and specialist equipment/resources
  • Full working knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation
  • Ability to self-evaluate and actively pursue professional learning opportunities
  • Ability to build effective relationships with children and adults
  • Relevant first aid knowledge
  • Willingness to undertake additional training and staff development
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, equal opportunities policies
  • Willingness to support and promote the Catholic ethos of the school
