Second in Charge (2iC) - Teacher of Maths job summary
We are seeking an ambitious and inspiring Second in Charge of Maths to join our high-performing department. Working closely with the Director of Learning (DoL) for Mathematics, you will support the operational and strategic leadership of the subject, driving excellence in teaching and learning, curriculum development, and student achievement.
The successful candidate will play a key role in:
- Leading on curriculum and assessment within the department to ensure the highest standards of achievement.
- Securing outstanding learning outcomes through consistently excellent teaching and targeted interventions.
- Supporting and developing staff, modelling best practice, and contributing to high-quality professional learning.
- Championing inclusion and safeguarding, ensuring every student experiences a positive and aspirational learning environment.
- Contributing to innovation within the Maths curriculum, embracing technology and the Academy’s IB ethos.
- Engaging with the wider Academy community, including parents and external partners, to promote success and celebrate achievement.
Key Responsibilities
With the Director of Learning, you will:
- Assist in setting and achieving ambitious attainment and progress targets.
- Monitor and evaluate teaching, learning, curriculum coverage, and standards of behaviour and attitudes.
- Support effective planning, assessment, and differentiation strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
- Act as a role model for outstanding classroom practice and lead by example.
- Support the development and delivery of departmental improvement plans.
- Work with the Inclusion Team to ensure that all interventions are effective and impactful.
- Support the organisation of parental engagement events, reporting, and progress review processes.
- Promote safeguarding, wellbeing, and the Academy’s commitment to equality and diversity.
About You
We are looking for a passionate, reflective, and forward-thinking Maths teacher who is ready to take the next step in their leadership journey.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Significant experience as a classroom teacher in a mainstream secondary setting.
- Proven record of improving student outcomes and securing high standards of learning.
- Excellent understanding of assessment processes at KS3–KS5 and how to use data effectively.
- Strong pedagogical knowledge and the ability to engage all learners.
- Experience in supporting or leading curriculum design, staff development, or subject improvement initiatives.
- Ability to model excellent classroom practice and mentor others.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience in a middle leadership or departmental management role.
- Experience conducting lesson observations and providing developmental feedback.
- Experience teaching A Level or IB Mathematics.
- Familiarity with the IB philosophy or international education context.
- Evidence of continued professional development or award-bearing study.
