Second in Department - Mathematics job summary
Do you share our belief that all pupils are
capable of achieving extraordinary things, and that excellent pupil conduct and
a world class curriculum developed by subject experts are the ways to achieve this?
Do you want to work in a school where the SLT
actively support colleagues to maintain the highest standards of pupil behaviour?
Could you help us to develop the best maths
curriculum in the country and teach it expertly?
Then you should be interested in joining our oversubscribed
11-16 school in the centre of Bedford.
We are recruiting a Second in Maths to support the Head of
Department in leading our talented team of specialist maths teachers. You would
bring your expertise as the sixth member of the department in a small school of
just 500 pupils, allowing us more flexibility in setting and interventions and
more time for departmental collaboration, professional learning and curriculum
development.
RESPECT, HONESTY, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
At BFS our values drive everything that we do. We are a
genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for
students of all backgrounds, with the highest expectations of pupil conduct. We
teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been
thought and said and, as you would expect, maths is at the heart of this.
WHY BEDFORD FREE SCHOOL?
We take workload seriously. We have a two-week October half-term;
we have no unwieldy and impossible marking policies, no written reports, no
graded lesson observations or teacher appraisal, and no endless meetings. We
respect teachers as experts in their subject and prioritise giving time for
departments to discuss what they are teaching, why and how.
Our pupils’ behaviour is excellent, supported by clear systems
and routines, including centrally delivered, same-day whole-school sanctions
where necessary. All pupils carry an Achievement Card to every lesson, so that any
low-level behaviour issues can be tracked between lessons and addressed. Senior
and Middle Leaders visit every lesson in a supportive capacity, so a colleague will
always be available to support you with everything from behaviour to a cup of
tea.
All of this means that you will be able to
dedicate your time and energy into working with your colleagues to improve the
curriculum, teaching and outcomes in maths.
PARENTAL CHOICE
With waiting lists in each year group and GCSE results placing
us amongst the top schools for pupil progress in the country, we are a hugely
popular school. Demand for places is very high as parents want the combination
of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their
children.
We’re looking for people who share our belief that all pupils
are capable of extraordinary things. You will be willing to work hard to ensure
their success, preparing them to go to university and, beyond that, join the
community of educated citizens. You will be an excellent teacher whose subject
knowledge, expertise, and willingness to “go the extra mile” will inspire your
colleagues in the maths department and the wider school. You will be committed
to your own professional development and that of your colleagues.
THE DEPARTMENT
We have an excellent, well-resourced curriculum that has been
carefully developed and which you, supporting the Head of Department and the
rest of the team, would play an important role in regularly discussing and
refining. You will support the Head of Department to lead a team of committed, hard-working
subject-specialists.
The department at Bedford Free School is housed in 4 dedicated
classrooms, each equipped with interactive whiteboards, projectors, and
mathematics equipment. Mathematics teachers have a maximum of 5 classes and
have a departmental office which provides a quiet working space and the
opportunity for the close-knit team to come together regularly.
Pupils achieve well in maths—their progress in the subject in
2022 was significantly above the national average, and we anticipate similar
based on this year’s GCSE results. But we are seeking a candidate who shares
our belief that all our pupils can achieve even better.
SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT
Career development is
a priority at BFS. We are outward-facing, with partnerships across the country:
our staff have contributed to the delivery of National Professional
Qualifications, the Early Career Framework and, as a lead school, the Behaviour
Hub programme. We do not have appraisal for teaching staff. Instead, teachers
benefit from yearly personal development conversations with a focus on career
development. You will be joining us at an exciting time: our
multi-academy trust is expanding which, in addition to creating exciting
opportunities for our staff in the future, has further expanded our capacity to
deliver the high-quality induction and ongoing professional development which will
support you in your role.
WHAT TO
DO NEXT
Thank you
for your interest in teaching at BFS. We
strongly encourage prospective candidates to come and visit the school, to
speak to staff and pupils and see things for themselves.
For a confidential discussion about the position, contact Esther Logan, PA to
the Principal on 01234 332290 or email elogan@bedfordfreeschool.co.uk
Early applications are encouraged as we
reserve the right to close this post should a suitable candidate apply.
SAFEGUARDING
We are a small school, where teachers and students know each
other and look out for each other. Safeguarding children enrolled at the School
is of paramount importance, and we are fully committed to the protection and
safe care of our students. The successful applicant will be required to
undertake appropriate checks as well as providing proof of your right to work
in the UK.

Set up in 2012 by local teachers and parents, Bedford Free School exists to offer families a choice in Bedford.
Bedford Free School is a unique school with a fantastic educational offer. We really do believe that our pupils can go on to achieve extraordinary things. In our young history, we have proved they can and we are now one of the highest performing secondary schools not only in the area, but in the country.
BFS is a small school of only around 500 pupils, so staff get to know each pupil as an individual and we have a family feel. This allows us to encourage, demand and collectively strive for academic and personal success.
We believe that all pupils deserve a ‘grammar-school’ style education, with access to an academic curriculum, strong discipline, high expectations and access to highly selective universities, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
