Welcome from the Principal:

Thank you for your interest in the vacancy at Outwood Academy Brumby.

As Principal, it's my privilege to introduce you to our academy of 750 friendly students in the heart of Scunthorpe. We are deeply committed to the pursuit of excellence and to nurturing the potential of every child and staff member. By 2028, we will be celebrating 10 years of making a difference in our community.

What distinguishes us is our incredible staff team, who share a strong belief in the transformative power of education. We thrive on making positive, supportive relationships with everyone and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous growth.

We are looking for inspirational, dedicated professionals who will add value both academically and through involvement in the fabric of learning beyond the classroom. If you share our passion for making a meaningful difference, we would be thrilled to welcome you to our team. I look forward to meeting you.

Are you a dedicated and highly effective educator committed to raising the achievement of all students within your subject area? Join us as a Teacher, where you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality learning, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure student success.

This position requires a professional who is aware of strategies for improving learning, understands curriculum developments, and is creative in finding solutions to enhance student performance.

The Teacher is expected to implement and use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies within the classroom, applying techniques like Assessment for Learning (AfL) to continually improve student performance. A core duty involves effectively using student level data to identify areas for development and raise standards.

This professional must be aware of strategies available for improving the learning and achievement of all students, alongside possessing a good understanding of curriculum developments within their specific subject area. The role requires maintaining high expectations for all students and effectively communicating with students and their parents, both orally and in writing. The teacher is expected to work collaboratively as part of a team, sharing good practice across the department, and demonstrating creativity in problem solving and a willingness to adopt new approaches

Qualifications

Essential qualifications include a degree in an appropriate discipline related to the relevant subject and a teaching qualification coupled with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Required experience includes recent and relevant teaching experience (either in employment or training) and experience of assessment at Key Stage 3 and 4.

The successful candidate will be confident in using standard computer packages (word processing, email, and spreadsheets) and understand how these tools can enhance student learning. The role demands high levels of professionalism, including the ability to relate to students in a pleasant and sympathetic manner, and a capacity to recognise potential child safeguarding issues.

The English Department at Outwood Academy Brumby is a friendly and welcoming team made up of 7 teachers and 2 one-to-one tutors all with a wide range of experience and skills. Teaching takes place in the department’s seven classrooms with every teacher having their own dedicated room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. Some classrooms have large television screens and others interactive whiteboards. There is a library with a wide range of fiction to support students’ reading needs which is run by a full-time enthusiastic librarian.

The curriculum has been redesigned for knowledge to be developed almost fully through the study of texts, and there has been great investment in new books. Chosen novels, poetry and plays are culturally interesting, ambitious and engaging, includingHow to be a Kid taught in Year 7 andMy Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece in Year 8. Alongside a range of contemporary fiction, pupils are also exposed to a range of other literary texts both fiction and non-fiction includingCultures poetryin Year 7,Language Change in Year 8, andJekyll and Hyde in Year 9.

There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistants use the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English school improvement partners, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.
