Your new school
Lift Winton is a popular secondary school with a great reputation within the local community. The school boasts fantastic facilities, which includes a MUGA, a recently refurbished library and gymnasium, new music suite, dance studios, animal management area and expansive grounds. Due to the ongoing success of our existing CPA faculty we are looking to build our team. Whether you are a talented Music Teacher who is aspiring to middle management, or an experienced, existing Head of Music, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the continued development of the thriving musical and creative life of Lift Winton. We are well known for music and the performing arts as a school, and are proud to be one of the lead schools for Hampshire music Hub which is an exciting opportunity to be part of as a music lead.
Working closely with the Head of Performing Arts, you will take responsibility for the academic provision and outcomes of pupils in the school at all key stages 3/4 and oversee a vibrant and challenging curriculum, building on a strong foundation of examination outcomes in the first years of offering GCSE music. We currently have two GCSE Music classes and one Music Technology class in both years 10 and 11 and music is a popular subject amongst students.
The school maintained a 'Good' grade in the latest visit by Ofsted in 2023. We pride ourselves on a culture of high support and high expectations, and we have excellent relationships with families and the community who work closely with us to ensure every child receives an excellent education.
Your new role
The Music Department has two fantastic fully equipped IMac teaching rooms, two band rooms, a newly fitted recording studio and live room. We also have a theatre, radio room and brand new performance hall with tiered seating (perfect for concerts). You will be part of a Music department that celebrates the musical ability of all pupils and provides opportunities for all to experience a range of instruments. This includes our Orchestral instrument scheme where all year 7's have the chance to opt to learn an orchestral instrument for free for a term. Our teaching team will consist of two other teachers who are part of the senior leadership team and a team of nine Peripatetic teachers so you will be well supported in the role. We have regular opportunities to perform large-scale productions and have regular performances in school as well as being involved in national events such as Voice in a Million at the Ovo Stadium Wembley. . The school does two productions a year; the most recent productions being 'Les Miserables: school edition', 'Seussical the Musical' and 'Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat'. We also host a community orchestra for all young people in Andover which we would love you to oversee.
What you'll need to succeed
We are looking for an aspiring future leader who wants to learn and be involved in leading and supporting the whole faculty. Lift Winton is a rapidly improving 11-16 school situated in Andover in the centre of Hampshire, a short commute from Winchester, Salisbury and many picturesque Hampshire villages.
We are a large secondary school (1031 students) and offer tailored learning opportunities and a creative curriculum which meets the needs of our whole school community.
Winton has many strengths and people who visit are always impressed with our outstanding students, excellent facilities and calm, purposeful learning environment.
Winton aims to provide an outstanding education for all of the local children. What we want is an outstanding Andover education system for Andover children. The vision needs to be that all three phases of education in Andover are all excellent. Winton is very much at the centre of this vision.
The most important part of any school is the quality of the teaching. When walking around the corridors at Winton you will see students engaged in their learning and being challenged to think. The expectation is to have a positive mindset, an 'I can...' attitude to their learning. Rather than thinking "I can't do", this students are encouraged to think 'I can't do this...yet'. Classrooms are positive because of the positive relationships between students and teaching staff. Expectations are high, with regular and meaningful homework and innovative and engaging classwork which embraces new ideas and new technologies.
Our Curriculum
Our vision for the delivery of a broad and balanced 11-19 curriculum is founded on the following key principles:
Students can progress at their own pace but with staff ensuring that there is always pace and challenge
Technologies e.g. ICT will be as available as electricity and seen as another utility, which will facilitate learning in different contexts;
Personalised learning will be a reality with a wide ranging curriculum, which provides far more choice and less prescription;
Learning experiences will be coherent, integrated and not fragmented with an emphasis on learning and skill acquisition and transferal;
The curriculum will develop lifelong learners who will be able to adapt to take up jobs in the future, which do not presently exist;
The curriculum will embrace wider curriculum opportunities that bring learning to life in vivid fashion;
The curriculum will reflect the values and beliefs outlined previously: personal development is integral to the outcomes of the curriculum and success measures for this curriculum.
Ofsted
Winton was recently inspected by Ofsted and for the second time running has been recognised as a “Good” school.
The report sets out how the school has high aspirations for all their pupils, preparing them for the next stages of life with a curriculum that is “relevant and ambitious.” Inspectors noted that staff at Winton appreciated leaders’ efforts to help manage workloads.
The school has also been praised for their decisive response to the challenges students face post-Covid, including forging positive relationships with pupils to better help their behaviour and personal development. The report recognises the efforts to create a healthy school culture, by creating a “strong system for support” that helps to improve all areas of school life. We warmly welcome any interested prospective candidates to come and see our school in person.
