What skills and experience we're looking for

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We have a designated senior member of the leadership team who is responsible for referring and monitoring any suspected case of abuse. All members of staff will receive training in line with our child protection policy.

Employment at this school is subject to an enhanced check with the DBS. Checks will also be made against the Barred List. All such checks must be satisfactory before we confirm any offer of an appointment.

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Amendment), there are a number of jobs where we must take account of any convictions that are unspent or not ‘protected’. The amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013) provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are 'protected' and are not subject to disclosure to employers and cannot be taken into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the www.gov.uk website.

Unspent and unprotected convictions may not necessarily make you unsuitable for appointment.

We are a small, friendly, family school, with great children and a friendly team of staff. Situated in Rothwell, about 3 miles south of Leeds City centre, we serve a local community which is economically and socially diverse and draws its pupils from the surrounding area. The percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals is above average. A small number of our pupils are from ethnic minority families. The school is one and a half form entry with 161 pupils aged 7-11 years on roll. Most of the children transfer to us at the end of KS1 from our local infant feeder school – Cockburn Haigh Road Academy.
The school caters for a very wide ability range and aspires to provide an exciting, creative curriculum that is meaningful and relevant to our children. The OFSTED inspection in May 2023 judged Victoria as Good overall with Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare judged to be strengths of the school. The report states:

• The school’s vision and values are evident in the day-to-day life of the school.
• Leaders expect pupils to work hard and show care and respect to others.
• The provision for personal development is of a high quality. Leaders provide an impressive range of opportunities to help pupils develop their understanding of the world
• Leaders have carefully planned the curriculum that they want pupils to study in all subjects
• Leaders are highly knowledgeable about the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

We have very good links with our local Family of Schools and extended services cluster, which provides excellent opportunities for networking and collaborative work.

We are looking for a self-motivated person who is passionate about education and interested in working within a team who are determined to make a difference to children’s futures.

Unfortunately, due to school holidays, visits to the school may not be possible. However we very much welcome interested applicants making an appointment for a telephone conversation with the Head Teacher prior to submitting an application. This can be arranged by emailing: amanda.burrow@victoria-jun.leeds.sch.uk
