SEN Teaching Assistant - Hammer Lane job summary

Waterton Academy Trust are delighted to be looking to appoint committed and experienced teaching assistants to join our brand new staff team in our new provision at Hammer Lane.

Hammer Lane Academy is a purpose-built independent specialist school for children in EYFS and KS1 that will open in September 2025. It provides an environment, that empowers children to make progress providing the support required to develop according to their personal needs as identified in their Education Health and Care Plan.

To join on us on this exciting journey, we are seeking practitioners with expertise in supporting children, or a willingness to develop within this area, with a range of additional and complex needs, particularly those with ASD and social communication/interaction difficulties. We are seeking applicants with experience of working with a range of communication interaction strategies and communication systems such as Pictorial Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) and Makaton signing systems and experience of working with bespoke/personalised curriculums to meet individual need.

The whole staff team will work in a positive and collaborative environment where the needs of the children are at the heart of all best practice and decision-making. Waterton Academy Trust consists of 13 primary phase schools, 1 specialist SEN unit attached to a school, 1 specialist setting and 4 pre-schools in the Wakefield and Barnsley area. As part of this Trust both staff and children enjoy varied opportunities for collaboration in all areas of the curriculum.

We are looking for teaching assistants who:

Have relevant experience of working with pupils with complex needs

Are positive and confident in using their knowledge of current theory and practice in teaching and learning, and SEND

Are ready to utilise the benefits of a curriculum that is innovative and flexible in terms of delivery and content

Will be engaged with the provision’s ethos, thinking creatively and reflectively within an open and honest team, whilst keeping the needs of the pupils firmly at the centre

Are able to share best practice, be flexible and compassionate

Will develop positive relationships with pupils and able to use a variety of strategies to meet individual needs

Will be enthusiastic, confident and able to use their initiative

Will play a full part in the life of the academy and be committed to working in partnership with staff and parents

Will relish opportunities for continuing professional development
