The School
Matthew Arnold is an oversubscribed, inclusive 11-18 school with over 1,300 pupils, serving both urban and rural communities across west Oxford. The school prides itself on high achievement and improving outcomes, particularly for disadvantaged students. We are seeking a committed and experienced SENDco to lead and coordinate SEND provision across the school. The role ensures that all students with SEND have access to an ambitious, inclusive curriculum, receive high-quality support, and are empowered to succeed both academically and as valued members of the school community.
Job Purpose
The SENDCo works closely with the Assistant Headteacher (Inclusion) to support the needs of vulnerable learners across the school. The purpose of the role is to ensure that all learners with SEND are able to access the full range of learning opportunities, experiences and the curriculum on offer at Matthew Arnold School - identifying and intervening when barriers emerge to remove them.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion to embed SEND provision within the School Improvement Plan and strategic priorities. They will also provide expert guidance to staff, liaise with parents and external agencies, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements including the Equality Act 2010.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the implementation of the school’s SEND policy and coordinate provision for students with SEND, including those with EHC plans
- Provide professional support to colleagues, ensuring Quality First Teaching and inclusive practice across all lessons
- Advise on the graduated approach to SEND support and contribute to staff training and development
- Oversee the deployment of SEND resources and budget in collaboration with the AHT Inclusion and Business Manager
- Liaise with external agencies, including the local authority, to secure appropriate support and interventions
- Ensure tailored or alternative provision is in place where necessary, with robust quality assurance and safeguarding measure
- Support smooth transitions for students by liaising with feeder schools and next-phase providers
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date SEND records and monitor progress data to inform future interventions
- Line manage Learning Support staff, including oversight of examination access arrangements
- Participate in county-level SEND moderation as requires
- This role is essential to maintaining a culture of high expectations and inclusive education at Matthew Arnold School
- Responsible for embedding health and safety within the department
