SEND Class teacher job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher to join our Internal Alternative Provision (IAP). This is a specialist role working with pupils who have SEND/SEMH needs. You'll play a vital part in helping these pupils overcome barriers and either reintegrate into mainstream classes or transition successfully to specialist provision

What we're looking for in our IAP teacher:

  • Experience or strong interest in working with pupils with SEND/SEMH needs
  • Patience, resilience and emotional intelligence
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils
  • Skills in de-escalation and therapeutic behaviour management
  • Commitment to understanding that behaviour is communication
  • Flexibility to adapt teaching approaches and curriculum to individual needs
  • Collaborative approach to working with families and external agencies

What will the role involve?

  • Teaching small groups or individuals with complex needs
  • Delivering a flexible, personalised curriculum (including pre-formal and semi-formal pathways)
  • Implementing behaviour support plans and individual education plans
  • Working closely with SENCo, pastoral team, and external professionals
  • Supporting pupils' social and emotional development alongside academic progress
  • Monitoring progress using a range of measures (not just academic attainment)
  • Planning for reintegration or transition in collaboration with mainstream colleagues

This role is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. You'll need resilience, creativity, and a genuine belief that every child can succeed with the right support.

In return we will offer you:

  • A welcoming, friendly, and supportive school community
  • A positive environment where children are eager to learn
  • A strong focus on staff and student wellbeing
  • Specialist training to help you broaden your skills and expertise
  • Smaller class sizes allowing for individualised support
  • The opportunity to make a profound difference to pupils' lives
